| Right now I'm looking at colleges to apply to (mostly liberal arts), and I have a few questions about the weed scene at colleges. I'm not much of a drinker, and I don't really want my social life to revolve around alcohol. However, I love weed and I plan on using it even more in college. When I'm filling out my housing forms, is there any way that I can find a happy medium between the two? I don't necessarily want to request to be put in a substance-free area, but I don't want to drink a lot. If I do request substance-free living, I'm sure I can seek out smoking buddies elsewhere, but I don't know if I'll be stuck with a bunch of people who hate weed on my hall. As you can see, I don't really know much about college social life. Your answers are appreciated. If it's any help, I plan on applying to liberal arts colleges in the northwest (Reed, Louis and Clark) and some in the northeast (Bates, Vassar, American U). |

| I lived in a so-called "dry" dorm my freshman year (meaning that no alcohol is allowed in the buildings at all). Most of the housing for freshmen and sophomores was dry because most freshmen and sophomores are under 21. However, lots of people drank and my building (especially the floor I lived on) was anything but dry. I don't think you should assume that just because housing is labeled "substance-free" that all of the people living in said housing are necessarily going to be substance-free themselves. I go to a big university and students are lucky if they get on-campus housing, so people will take a room in a dry dorm just because it's either that or living off campus. Plus, some of the dry dorms are nicer, have bigger rooms, etc., so it's all a matter of choice that really has little to do with being "dry" or not. But one thing you should know is that there are penalties for possession of alcohol in dry/substance-free dorms that you wouldn't get in other dorms (at least at my school). Suffice to say, if you're caught with booze in a dry dorm, you're going to get written up and you will be punished, but if you're caught in regular dorm, they usually don't punish you (if you're under 21, they'll make you dump your alcohol down a drain, though). So that might be something to consider. Even if you're not a big drinker, if you want to leave a couple of beers in the mini fridge to drink on a hot afternoon, those beers might cost you quite a bit if you're caught with them in a dry/substance-free dorm. Anyway, since all universities differ, perhaps you could ask some people who are currently attending the schools you're interested in. I'm sure they'd be able to provide better insight as to what the rules are and what kinds of people typically live in the different dorms. (Though I'd ask a regular student, not an orientation leader or tour guide when you visit schools, because those people are paid by the university to make you and your parents think the school is just what you want....not that there's anything wrong with that. But you might just get a more honest (less sugarcoated) answer from a regular student.) Good luck!

| i would recommend dry. a lot of people who like peace and quiet are the same people who don't give a rats ass what you do as long as you're respectful to the living arrangement. i took the "quiet" wing in my dorms and it turned out to be the best year of my life. just really chill people who don't want to put up with drunk bullshit.
