Ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been captured by US forces in Iraq, the coalition says.
He was found hiding in a cellar in his ancestral hometown of Tikrit, Iraqi official Ahmed Chalabi said.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has welcomed the news saying it "removes the shadow" from over Iraq.

Saddam Hussein is the most wanted man on the list issued by US authorities but has not been seen since Baghdad fell to US forces in April.

Intensive search

A spokeswoman for US-led coalition forces in Baghdad said that a "very important" announcement would be made at a news conference at 1200 GMT but would not give further details.

Saddam Hussein has been the subject of intensive searches by US-led forces in Iraq but previous attempts to locate him have proved unsuccessful.

People have started celebrating the possible capture of their former president in the streets of Baghdad and the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk.

The former Iraqi leader was last seen in television footage shot in April at a Baghdad market just before the city fell to US forces in the recent Iraq conflict.

US authorities have offered a $25m reward for information leading to his capture.

On 22 July his sons, Uday and Qusay, were killed in a raid by US forces in the northern city of Mosul.

Intelligence

In October, US officials said they had intelligence indicating Saddam Hussein was hiding in Tikrit.

They said he seemed to be moving around various safe houses with the aid of family members, often in disguise.

Saddam Hussein was born in Tikrit and has a tight network of family and clan ties which permeated all of the regime's main military, security and political institutions while he was in power.

The BBC's Caroline Hawley in Baghdad says it is not clear how US forces will verify that the identity of the man they reportedly have in custody is Saddam Hussein and not one of his doubles.

And with his capture we're all going one step further into violence and interracial conflicts. I'll have a spliff to that.

joy to the world,
saddams been caught
to me this means but nought
even though the U.S.
celebrate at his arrest,
Do they think they'll win?
Theres still old man Bin,
hussains followers
and U.S haters...

Sorry bout that, i thought since its christmas, or close to, i'd make my reply a bit more christmassy, but its true, just cos they caught 'so dam insain', theres still bin laden, insains followers and the odd nutball that just has to screw it up for everyone else...

cool... i woke up in front of the tv saying sadam had been captured wondering if i was still dreaming. but the best part was when they showed sadam being inspected for lice in his hair and then turned his face to the camera to shine a light in his mouth. like a monster that had finally been captured. another shot of the "spider hole" where they found him. the iraqi reporters started yelling. powerful stuff.

The real questions are...

1) Will this cause all the insurgents to stop killing US soldiers? (No, because they're there to shoot Americans, not try and return Sadam to power)

2) Will this be used by Bush in the election? (Yes, and it'll really help his chances at reelection)

Sadam getting caught is good and all, but it certainly won't change anything.

This is great news but just as WNB said, bad things still await us.

Lets just hope this doesnt effect the 2004 election. (YEAH RIGHT)

But for now lets boogie and celebrate the capture of one ganfalf looking saddam.

Heres a question for you guys: Should we kill him and if we do, when?

no, No, NO! The iraqi government, which is scheduled to take over in June of 2004, MUST be the group which puts Saddam on trial. Most of his crimes were committed against Iraqis. Let them determine proper justice.

His crimes weren't only against Iraqis.

To be honest, this actually creates quite a few difficulties. What the hell are they going to do with him? It's really important that this isn't ****ed up; torturing and killing him will do no good.

Right now there is no chance in hell that any judicial system in Iraq is capable of handling this type of prosecution. There probably isn't a hope of this in the next few years. But it must be done properly, it'd be an injustice to the victims to have a sham trial, regardless of the situation.

Will Bush use this in the election? Is it really ****ing cold in Iqualuit? But this is only one man; if it doesn't stop the attacks, then it isn't going to help. Saddam couldn't have been the primary planner behind the guerrilla attacks, he wasn't exactly a military mastermind.

This should be interesting...

LaHood: Hussein's capture imminent

Pantagraph Staff

BLOOMINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood held his thumb and forefinger slightly apart and said, "We're this close" to catching Saddam Hussein.

Once that's accomplished, Iraqi resistance will fall apart, said the five-term Republican congressman from Peoria who serves on the House Intelligence Committee.

A member of The Pantagraph editorial board -- not really expecting an answer -- asked LaHood for more details, saying, "Do you know something we don't?"

"Yes I do," replied LaHood.

LaHood spent an hour at the newspaper Monday, discussing the war on terror, the 2004 elections, Central Illinois' regional economic development and his less-than-enthusiastic appraisal of Gov. Rod Blagojevich's performance.

The comment about the deposed Iraqi president came while LaHood discussed next year's elections.

The congressman said he's been disappointed with U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald and believes the Republican senator isn't seeking a second term because "he can't get the votes."

[SNIP]
It all seems too fishy. Rigged.... Scripted, like so many other things about this administration.

Perhaps it is just because they have told such a great many lies, nothing they say can be trusted without several weeks of independent verification.

It is just tooooo convenient, especially with the Halliburton MegaFraud threatening to blow up in their faces.

I suppose there are many angles possible to spin this...

How about "Checkmate! We Win! Now the war is over and we can bring everybody back home?" Probably not. Hussein is not that important. He was already called "inconsequential" by the Adminstration that knows everything better than you do.

I think it is at best a "propaganda coup" in that the sheep, and the media that shepherds them, will bleat euphorically - on cue - and Halliburton will keep sucking money directly out of the Federal government into its pockets.

It's a coup because it did not need J-Lo or Scott Peterson, or even Micheal Jackson.

In the end, this will solve nothing in Iraq and give Bush a week's bump - maybe - in his ultra-saggy popularity polls.

Not to be deterred though, FAUX is busy pronouncing Bush the Son of God - Bush did jack sh*t but gets this fawning treatment.

Next.... Saddam will die mysteriously in custody.

(If he doesn't sign a fake confession accepting the blame for 9/11, anthrax, homosexuality, BC Bud, AND global warming.)
