Kerala is an ideal tourism destination. It provides diverse options for a family holiday. There are beaches, hill stations, old Jewish settlements, spice plantations, temple towns and wildlife sanctuaries. Kerala is called as God’s own country and spice garden of India. Idukki is a southern district in Kerala. The district is land locked and is nestled in the Western Ghats. It has more than 50% land covered by forests. With altitudes ranging from 2500feet to over 5000 feet above sea level, Idukki district provides an ideal retreat for wild animals and birds. The forests are a source of teak wood, sandalwood and rosewood. There are many streams, valleys and hills that make Idukki district very scenic. The district is famous for power generation. More than 66% of the power comes from this district. The Hydel power project located at Moolamattom supplies about 60% of the power to the state. Apart from this, the district is famous for its wildlife sanctuary and tiger reserve at Thekkady. Thekkady is a spice town and site for wildlife sanctuary. From Thekkady distance to the nearest airport is about 5 hours drive. The Periyar wildlife sanctuary is located in Thekkady in Idukki district. This sanctuary was declared as Tiger reserve in 1978 in order to protect and conserve the national animal. The other wild animals that can be seen here are elephants, bisons, gaurs and sambar deer. A variety of birds are also seen here.

The main attraction of this sanctuary is the Periyar Lake that is located in the midst of the sanctuary. This is a man-made lake that is main source of water for the animals. It spreads over 26sq kms and was conceived by a British engineer Col-V.Pennycuick who was the then chief engineer of Madras Presidency. Boating facilities are provided in the lake. This provides a great opportunity to view the wild animals in close quarters. Entry timing to the sanctuary is from 0600 to 1800 Hrs.
