I need some help. I've had this cat for 7 years and we've had some ups and downs with a relationship. My father and I didn't have the greatest attitude (for lack of a better term) towards that cat when she was young. I was a child and didn't know how to care for an animal.
My father had spinal surgery and has spent every day at home (aside from doctor's appointments, meetings, friends, etc.) with the cat. He has had time to build a fairly good relationship with the cat. I, however, go to school and do not have all the time in the world to care for a cat. I'd like to spend a little more time with the animal and try to befriend my cat seriously for the first time. I have special food that she likes, toys, and catnip. I've been playing music for her during the day (when I'm not home).
Does anyone have any suggestions to help me out? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

rub the cat nip on ur pants. or just be the only one to feed it for like a month. both might work, but with cats i wouldnt expect anything to really work except for the cat just wanting to b ur friend.

Take full responsibility for the animal. Feed it, pet it, play with it, etc. Make it want to depend on you for letting it out of the house. Just spend as much time with it as possible. Maybe buy some toys for the cat, get it some cardboard catnip scratchers and hand feed it catnip from time to time.

I already feed her catnip, but she sometimes hisses at me if I try to make her a pile (or hand her a toy with some rubbed on it).
Maybe I'll just try constantly doing everything for her and see if she starts to appreciate me a little more.

find the cats tickle spots....every cat has them (behind ear,leg, on the stomach)..lie next to the cat and tickle these spots for a few minutes a day, also doing all the other things already mentioned...usually a clear sign a cat likes you is when they start pushing into/rubbing along your hands and purring when you stroke them... do this for a while and see how it goes...works with me and most cats

Keep in mind that cats are very independent. Many times they choose their owners, we don't choose them.

Precisely why I prefer dogs... very loyal and perk right up when you walk in the door.

Cats are good too though, I like letting their tails slide through my fingers....

But yeah, you just need to spend more time with her and she will likely get happy when you're around. My friend's cat "snigger" sleeps on his stomach as he watches TV.. so there's potential to become very close with them, you just need to work at it

It can be tough getting close to a cat.. sometimes, they either like you or they don't. My room mate's cat didn't like me much before.. now we're best buddies (sort of, we're still getting there). It can be hard to gain the trust and respect of our feline friends. Just be nice and maybe she'll come around. Don't force it, she'll hate you even more

Getting a cat to like you isn't easy, first you have to gain its trust, making sure it's not in any way afraid of you which will be difficult if youv'e not had a "good attitude" towards it for years.

Best way to do this is simply feeding it and stroking it occassionally over a steady period of time but give it some space and do NOT keep picking it up every two seconds, wait for it to come to you.

Once it has gained your trust it will start to show signs of affection towards you like rubbing its cheeks against you purring etc. Then you will be able to pick it up and play with it and it will love you for it
