| Hey All, I'm travelling to Amsterdam this summer, and I was wondering if anyone has any interesting stories to share, or any good info about the place. I'd also be interested in learning where you think I can find more info (aside from sites I can find through Yahoo! etc)... Thanks! | |

| Well, I've been there alright, but it was kind of a flying visit, so I can't claim to be any sort of an expert. But we did figure a few things out while we were there... Firstly, never never NEVER try to buy anything from the guys who come up to you in the street trying to sell drugs. From the moment you come out of the train station, you'll have guys coming up to you saying stuff like "<other illicit drugs>?" or "How much you want?" These guys are not for real, they're just con-men who rip off tourists. Tourists take out their wallets, they grab them and run off. And people are reluctant to go to the cops and say "I tried to buy illegal drugs and this guy ripped me off", even in Amsterdam. Just say no and keep walking. (Wow, never thought I'd end up sounding like a WOD-warrior )Apart from that, and other pickpocketing scams, the city is surprisingly safe, even at night. I put this down to the total absence of drunk people on the streets. Which reminds me of another thing: Amsterdam is the wrong place to go for drinking, because the Dutch don't seem to drink much themselves.Which is the second thing, MJ and a few other "herbal" drugs are decriminalised, but hard drugs are still completely illegal, just so you know. As for coffeeshops, there are two main kinds. Firstly there are the one's that look like cafes or bars, which are generally the best ones to go for. Then there are the ones that look more like chipshops, usually with a big "coca cola" sign over them. These are best avoided, because often the clientele and staff are all North Africans who all seem to know each other and don't take too well to stoned foreigners staggering in. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Africans, my point is just that these coffeeshops generally seem pretty parochial. There's a coffeeshop called "Greenhouse effect" which is very popular with Americans, and I think it's even run by Americans. The Dutch don't use bongs much, so a coffeeshop with plenty of working bongs makes a nice change. I can't remember where it is though, I was kind of at the zenith of stonedness when we were there. ![]() Also there's a small place called "Rusland" on a street of the same name, which is apparently the oldest coffeeshop in the city. It was very cool, although the music was very dancey. (I'm more of a led zep fan myself...) Then there's the Bulldog chain, which are kind of like the McDonalds of coffeeshops. You'll probably get better weed elsewhere, but they're not bad to smoke in. One last thing: I would really recommend anyone visiting Amsterdam, (male or female), to visit the red-light district, just for a look. It is easily the most screwed-up place I've ever seen, and a stroll around there at 2 in the morning will really make you appreciate how lucky you are. Honestly. Nothing very sexy about it, it's just pretty miserable. Anyway, that's all I can think of at the moment. If anything else comes to mind, I'll get back... enjoy the holiday. Hope to get back there again myself this summer ![]()

| There is no reason to talk about it when you can find out for yourself. The site to visit is http://smokersguide.com/sg/smokersguide.html. It will tell you everything. I wish I could go to Amsterdam and smoke some of that good stuff. | |

| Enjoy your vacation in Amsterdam. You will be amazed at how good liberty feels. Once you return to "the States" you will be greeted by German Sheperds, guards with guns, random searches, and all sorts of uniformed personnel looking for "terrorists". And don't dare say one peep of protest or question about search warrants because they don't welcome dissent. That was the experience of my welcome home in June. |

I just recently saw a thing on the telly about Amsterdam and it's marijuana culture, the bars, cafes, etc.My friend and I are planning on going to Amsterdam after we turn 18. Along with some other places more seriously focused on psychedelic exploration.. hehe Have a blast, and smoke a d00b for me. ![]() | |

| I spent about a week in Amsterdam a year ago and had the best time a smoker could ever have. Among what all the others have replied to you, I would say find out where De Gralle (coffee shop) is and go there. It's not a tourist spot but a place to mingle with some very cool locals, play a little chess, or pool, sip your coffee or check your e-mail. Not expensive either. Don't drive down the Tram tracks during working hours ( they don't like it when you do that LOL). Check out www.amsterdam.nl, it's a good site that can lead you anywhere you want to go and has prices for every hotel/lodging in town. By the way they also like to smoke their weed mixed with tobacco so if you see people buying A cigarette that's why. I could talk forever but........Have an awesome time, I'm jealous! Peace | |
