| I live in Atlanta - well, Marietta to be exact. I know, I know - Marietta's the conservative capital of the world, but I took a job here - so what am I going to do? I smoked a bit at university - the concrete campus if you know what I'm talking about. But, now that I'm in the real world I've found that reliable smoke is hard to come by. Have you had much luck? | |

My thinking was that, perhaps by replying to the thread, others in the ATL area may chime in. I went to a bar in ATL last night. I'm not going to say where or which one. It's not like I was just going in cold, either. I had been directed there by a nice lady who understood my situation. I didn't think she was lying. So anyway I'm drinking a beer in this bar, eyeballing the customers and the staff, and there's nothing obvious that really jumps out at me except the shift manager, who fits the profile of a 'head...Cheech and Chongish long hair, beard, jeans and sneakers, you know? And just an expression of...warmth, I guess. Somebody you would like to get high with. Now as far as the customers go... there wasn't anybody that really fit any kind of profile...and they were involved in conversations themselves (couples, friends) and not giving me any eye contact. Anyways after about 30 min of nursing the beer and idle chit-chat with the bartender, I make my move. "Do ya know any of the regulars that come to this place?" He sez, "Yeah, I've been working here a while, I know most of them." "I've been lookin for a lady, by the name of Mary Jane." His brow wrinkles, he's searching his memory. Then he looks at me again. I'm grinning. "You know where I can find Mary Jane?" He wasn't the optimal pick; he looked like a serious grad student earning money for college, and the bartending was just a sideshow. I should have tried the manager instead, b/c the manager fit the profile. He gets serious and uptight, and says, "No, you can't get it here and I don't think you can get it anywhere else, either." He's not angry or judgmental, but instead, frightened. I nod and then he goes back to cleaning cups or whatever. A few minutes later, he thinks I'm not watching him as he sneaks over to his manager, Mr. Head Case, and tells him what I just said. Now they're playing like they're not talking about me, but obviously they are. Mr. Head Case smiles; pretends he's not all that worried. And I know 2 things: 1.) the shift manager sells but only to the trusted ones, a small circle of intimate friends, and I'm about five layers removed from that, and 2.) Mr. Grad Student absolutely thinks I'm a cop. So they play it cool, going on about their business and pretending not to notice me, and I just finish my beer and move out, but I know what I need to know. Problem is, I live too far away to become a regular at the bar. I can see already that a couple of nights, at the minimum, would be required to build up trust with these guys. Until then, I'm pegged as the clumsy undercover LEO trying to shut down the joint. | |
