I know what GPA stands for (Grade Point Average) But what do the numbers mean??

Can someone please explain i hear this on tv all the time and dont know what it is.

In New Zealand we dont use this system.

Also, if i was to go to college in the States are SAT's important??

4.0 is as the highest you can get, the equivalent of straight A's. It breaks down to something like, 4.0-A, 3.0-B, 2.0-C, 1.0-D. I don't think those are exactly right, a B is probably higher than 3.0 and so on, but thats close. Its like you get a score (from 0-4.0) depending on what you earned in the class. All your scores from all your classes are averaged together.If a class is weighted (for honors and advanced classes) it can actually be worth more than 4.0, if a person recieves an A+. It is possible for a person to take mostly honors classes and earn more than a 4.0 .

At my university it goes:
4.0 A
3.0 B
2.0 C
1.0 D
0.0 F

and you add or subtract 0.3 for + and - (B+ = 3.3, A- = 3.7)

I have marks in the high 2s and low 3s. In high school I had a 92 average. Engineering is bloody hard.
