| TV does suck man. Very few programs have anything intelligent to say and it's all a bunch of brainwash bull****. If you can't finish a book, you're not reading the right books. Books can be boring, but some i can't stop reading. Don't get sucked in by the machine. Don't watch their damn conformist ads and programs. Fight the power. Eat Special K. Strawberries are good too. R.I.P. Snickers. Rock on. Later |

| Problem with me reading a book is I can stay on the same page for 10 minutes and still not know what I just read. [edit] So why is it different here, I wonder? I guess it must be because half of you are also stoned [/edit] |

| Books are cool. The're like a movie in your head. Don't read books stoned unless you can have time to concentrate really hard onb the book and nothing else.

It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable what then?" |

| wow, i am a firm believer in information being power and also advocate the freedom of information to flow readily available such as on the 'net. i guess that it should not come as a surprise to me that many of you dislike books to the point of hating them. this is simply absurd. books empower the individual to act upon their own reasoning; allowing them to formulate their own opinions and even discuss with friends of simuliar interests. books also make an excellent resource. i tend to find the more i read, the more educated i am. i could be wrong on this, but evidence tends to tip in my favor and in the favor of others who try it. i challenge anyone out there who thinks books are just a waste of time, to spend the next 6 months reading no less than 3 books, which gives approximately 2 months per book. just go to your local bookstore and pick out a few that interest you; fiction, non-fiction, whatever floats your boat. in 6 months, if you still think books arent for you, come back to this thread and present your reasoning for still thinking books arent worth the effort. *steps down from soapbox* Kill your TV. Think for yourself! ![]() keep tokin' keep learnin' ![]()

| TV is a commercialized, empty soundbyte meant to temporarily distract the uneducated masses. TV requires no thought, and is akin to having images and sounds forced down your throat, leaving no room for thought or analysis. Books serve as catalysts for thought and knowledge; each mind interprets them differently. Without the distraction of cascading images and inccessant noise, they leave plenty of room for analysis and allow the reader to properly evaluate the information being proccessed. Why anyone would ever claim the former to be superior to the latter is a complete mystery to me. | |

| With the exception of the Simpsons and re-runs of Northern Exposure, TV is a waste of time. I have two friends whose respective parents decided not to have a TV in the house when they were kids. They are two of the most intelligent, interesting (and well-read) people I know. It's nice to talk to people who can make conversation about something other than what happened on "Friends" last night... In the unlikely event that I ever have kids, the TV is going in the bin. In fact, probably long before that...Those of you who don't enjoy reading should try "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" by Hunter S. Thompson. If you don't enjoy that, then maybe it's terminal. But odds are you just haven't been finding good books to read.

| I spose Ill toss my opinion somewhere in between, I dont mind reading a book, and if i find a good fantasy or mystery book, Itll suck me right in, But I need to take SOME kind of interest in the book. And unless I like the book, The smallest bit of distraction will divert my attention and ill start day dreaming or thinking about something esle while Im just readin away, and then Ill just have read a page full of words. TV on the other hand, is just too easy to get into because of sound, and picture. Its not making your brain do any kind of work except sit there and take it whats on the boob-tube. And the people who make the show have already decided for you what things will look like. Television-External Movie. Book-Internal Movie.
