| I have a little dreidle... I made it out of clay... And when it's dry and ready... Oh dreidle I will play.... ..... ....then I'll carve it into a little bowl, and stick a stem on it and then put some lovely little nugz I got from Papa for the occassion and then we'll all sit around and eat latkes (potatoe pancakes) and hear the age old story of why we celebrate Chanukah.... Short version: They came.... They tried to destroy Us... They didn't succeed... ...oh yeah, they re-dedicated the Temple in Jerusalem and only had enough oil for one day, but miraculously it lasted 8 days until more oil could be made.... now Let's EAT! Long version: In the 2nd century BC, the Syrian-Greek regime of Antiochus sought to pull Jews away from Judaism, with the hopes of assimilating them into Hellenism -- Greek culture. Antiochus outlawed aspects of Jewish observance -- including the study of Torah -- which began to decay the foundation of Jewish life and practice. During this period, many of the Jews began to assimilate into Greek culture, taking on Greek names and marrying non-Jews. The great Temple in Jerusalem, of which the Western (or Wailing) Wall remains today was desecrated with idols of Greek gods and blood sacrifices of pigs and other ritually unclean animals made to these gods on the grounds. The Jews were denied religious freedom in their own homeland. In response, a band of Jews took to the hills of Judea in open revolt against this threat to Jewish life. Led by Matitiyahu, and later his son Judah the Maccabee ("The Hammer"), this small band of pious Jews led guerrilla warfare against the Syrian army. Antiochus sent thousands of well-armed troops to crush the rebellion -- but the Maccabees succeeded in driving the foreigners from their land. During this time the Jews continued to educate their children in in the study of Torah in the hidden caves in the hillsides. When the soldiers of Antiochus would come by, the children would run outside and be seen playing while their elders and teachers were seen playing games of gambling and chance with small wooden or clay tops similar to four sided dice that spun, called dreidls. Convinced that the Jews were adhering to the laws they would leave the students and teachers and move on. Jewish fighters entered Jerusalem in December, 164 BCE. The Holy Temple was in shambles, defiled and desecrated by foreign soldiers. They cleansed the Temple and re-dedicated it on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev. When it came time to re-light the Menorah, they searched the entire Temple, but only one small jar of oil bearing the pure seal of the High Priest could be found. Miraculously, the small jar of oil burned for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be brought. From then on, Jews have observed a holiday for eight days in honor of this historic victory and the miracle of the oil. Today, the observance of Chanukah features the lighting of a special Chanukah menorah with eight branches (plus a helper candle), adding one new candle each night. Other customs include spinning the dreidel (a top with Hebrew letters on the sides), eating "oily" foods like potato latkes (pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly donuts), and giving Chanukah gelt (coins) to children. OHHHHHHHH... Dreidle Dreidle Dreidle.... Happy Chanukah everyone... And may we all continue to enjoy hte blessing of religious freedom that we have and continue to strive for the freedoms we so strongly deserve. ![]() | |

| Is it time for Chanukah already? Why does everyone hate the Jews so much. Everytime something happened in History the Jews were blamed and nearly wiped out each time. ![]() But like roaches they couldn't be killed. Maybe God is looking over them. ![]()
