| This is not to be placed in Kewl Links, because it is not a cool link that I feel like showing off. It has to do with people and marijuana, and I intend to get a discussion going about what might influence these facts, whether or not they are accurate, etc. Anyway, here's the link: http://www.pridesurveys.com/main/ddm.html 11.2 percent of students who reported using marijuana also said they carried a gun while at school. One percent of the non-marijuana using student population surveyed said they carried a gun while at school When asked if they carried a gun (when not at school) for protection or as a weapon, 27.8 percent of the marijuana users said they did, while 6.3 percent of non-marijuana users reported the same Nearly one in three (29.3 percent) marijuana users said they took part in gang activities; 5.2 percent of non-marijuana users said the same. Suicide attempts have been on the rise among teens in recent years. Marijuana may play a part as 16.4 percent of marijuana users say they have thought about suicide “often” or “a lot,” compared to 4 percent of the non-marijuana using student population surveyed. An alarming number of marijuana users (62.9 percent or nearly two out of three) said they had stolen something worth $5 or more while not at school. For non-marijuana using students in the population surveyed, 14.9 percent said they had stolen something within the same value range. Community Activities. Seven in 10 marijuana users (70.6 percent) said that they "never" or "seldom" joined in community activities, compared to 48.8 percent of the non-marijuana using students reporting the same. Grades. Almost 12 percent of the marijuana users reported “never” or “seldom” making good grades at school. In contrast, 2.7 percent of non-marijuana users reported the same. After-school Activities. Almost half of the marijuana (44.9 percent) users reported “never” or “seldom” participating in school activities (eg, sports teams, band, clubs), while 24.2 percent of the non-marijuana users did not participate in school activities Getting in trouble. Marijuana users in the survey reported getting in trouble at school more frequently than their non-marijuana using counterparts, 16.9 percent vs 4.2 percent, respectively. Church or Synagogue. More than half (53.6 percent) of the marijuana-using respondents said they “never” or “seldom” attended church or synagogue; 26.8 percent of non-marijuana users reported same. Parent Communication. When asked if their parents talked with them about the problems of alcohol and drugs, almost half of the marijuana users (46.5 percent) said “seldom” or “never.” Only a third of the non-marijuana using students (33.9 percent) said the same. Family Rules. Students were asked if their parents set clear rules for them to follow. Of the marijuana users, 27.2 percent said that it was “seldom” or “never” that rules were set in their family, vs 10.8 percent of non-marijuana users reporting the same. Parental Discipline. When rules are broken, do parents punish their children? For students who reported using marijuana, more than a third (35.8 percent) said that parents “seldom” or “never” punished them when rules were broken. On the other hand, 18.1 percent of the non-marijuana students said their parents were unlikely to punish them. Ugh. Thoughts, comments?
