I'm recently 19, and I did most of that most of the time up till I was about 12, and so did all my friends. *shrugs*

My childhood was awesome, I wouldn't have changed a thing. I feel like I was born at a very exciting time, i've seen the rise of computers from the very first computer games like Pong, Pac Man and Space Invaders. Now, we live in a very convenient world but nothing stops us from doing anything people did over the past decades.

The downside to the world now is all the constraints, just about everyone feels they have a say in your life, "freedom" is as a free anymore. That's city/suburban life anyhow, rural life is still an option, ableit, contrastingly boring/dull for some.

Thumbs up Excellent thread, Peace

Thanks for bringing back so many great memories, bro...I'm glad I
grew up back then. Way better times back in the '50s/'60s than
the '00s (even looks weird)...they say technology is so wonderful,
it's going to be the downfall of 'use your imagination'...how many
times did we hear that? if things are so much better
for kids now, how come there's so many 'depressed' ones??

Very true! Thank you sir.

So is the fact about "not using their imagination". I believe that this is the main reason why we have seen so much violence in our youth today.

We didnt grow up with violent video games, transformers or war friendly cartoons. Thank Goodness!

Our most "violent" cartoon was probably yosemity sam chasing buggs with his -mideval time- shotgun ( i love looney tunes!)

there's no comparison between Duffy Duck and tweety bird with today's sunday morning cartoons...

The overuse of computers is indeed making all of us robots in front of them, thus not using our creativity and imagination.

I didnt really grow up with toys to be honest with you. i had to make my own toys and use my imagination to make i.e a tug boat out of my moms chocolate basket..

But it was more fun this way!!

My most favourite thing was when my grandpa would put me on the horse or around the goats and chickens..

Our most fun game was to let the wild rooster (or billy goat) out so he would chase us around the farm..

i believe that this is a healthier way of growing up instead of being around 4 walls all day. even if u have the most hi tech stuff around you and all the encyclopedias of the world...

I feel for all these kids growing up in the city with no real freedom and their parents constantly at work...

Kids need at least one of their parents at home when their growing up..no nanny or cable, toy or video game can replace a parental hug..

but then again what do i know...
i m just the farm grown peaceseeker

Exclamation you're smarter than the average Peace seeker!

hey bro, you need to give yourself more credit than that...you
should realize what sound advice you really are giving...like you
stated, I think 'looney tunes' were about as violent as it got, but
still funny as sh!t...I remember as 12 yr. old kids, we wouldn't
think twice about hopping on the subway at night & ride over to a
friend's house or something...our folks didn't have to worry, we'd
be just fine...yeah, all this technology is good (we couldn't be
doing this), but kids still need to get outside & play, which means
actual PLAY, not "let's go play a video game" mentality!

Im 19 but I remember when I was younger I would do a lot of the things mentioned above. I remember when I took one of those old school skateboards (wider with only the back side curving and the front was flat and kinda at a point) and a cardboard box and took a stick, jammed it through the box so I could push it against the ground to work like brakes.

I always used to play cops and robbers with imaginary guns in the forest with my friends when I lived in Lake Tahoe.

"I shot you!" "NO YOU DIDNT!"

Then I moved here and everything changed..

And you guys are right, I look at my little brother and he's always inside infront of the PS2. I'll admit it's fun and I play it too but that's almost all he does. Then again we arnt in the best neighborhood either so him staying inside has it's good points.

One thing I notice is that kids are more intelligent now days at a younger age but they lack some of the common sense that you get from interacting with the real world.

funny...kids in my neighborhood sem to spend lot sao time out doors...

maybe it's cause we're poorer...I believe the in word is "ghetto" (geeze that gives me a giggle since Papa and I are the only Jews in the neighborhood...guess you have to be a historiean to get he irony )...

kids are playing after school, stick ball/kickball/pick up foot ball in the open lot...king of the hill cause they dumped sand there a year ago and never built on it...

they play with the Pooch, and they bike to each other's homes and go to the 7-11. Mom's or Dad's or Aunts or Uncles or Grandparents drive kids to the friends homes' if it's far away... and they share stuff -- even skates (well there are two)

and we give each other stuff, specially at the end of the month when times get tighter...

and some have video games and they'll hang out at that house -- ususally around supper everyone scrambles home or the phone calls come in and every one is accounted for for a meal and then at dusk it's homework and tv and bed...School bus comes at 6:30 am (argh!)

Good kids too.

...yeah some of the H.S.er's even smoke pot... ...

Good families... Good homes...

...have a cookie

My kids would play outside 24/7 if I would let them. I moved a few years ago from a town of 25,000 to a town of less than 500 just so I could cut the odds down a bit on bad things happening.

I let them ride their bikes with their friends or play at the park. I let them go somewhere for a couple of hours and then they have to check in.
Age has a lot to do with it too.

I solved the "sitting in front of the t.v. playing nintendo phase" by putting the nintendo and all the games high up in my closet where no one can reach.

They don't seem to miss it anymore.

I would hate to live in a big city where I couldn't trust letting them go down the block by themselves. No way to live.

When I read your post I had to go check to make sure my diary was still in my closet! Must have broken every bone in my body when I was younger. The thing about parents being on the police side(if you were wrong) is dead on the money to. In fact, would've preferred dealing with police instead of parents when I would throw ***t at the fan(LOL!).
