(Kahana-AP) -- Officials on Maui have re-opened the beaches around Kahana, a day after a local surfer was killed in a shark attack.

Fifty-seven-year-old Willis McInnis died yesterday after a shark bit him in the right leg as he surfed off Pohaku Beach Park.

Friends today recalled McInnis -- who was known as Will -- as a man who spread his spirit of generosity, love and friendship throughout his adopted home on Maui.

Officials had closed beaches in a mile in either direction after the attack yesterday, while boats and helicopters patrolled the waters searching for the shark.
Another shark attack, this time a death. You can say "your not going to get killed by a shark" all you want, sometimes it happens, and being on Maui it hits close to home. 15, killed young too. Peace, HN-

Yes, I assume so. Personally id rather die quick, head on collision with a semi, then have a shark rip my ass up and peices of me float on shore. Plus, if both are dangerous, skip one and you got decent odds.

I don't know about that. I fear sharks to some extent, but I don't mind living near the beach. Peace, HN-

I know the paramedic who happened to do the call for this guy who got attacked. I guess I was wrong, not 15, he was in his 50's. Anyway, the guy was dead on arrival it was a brutal bite. Swiming with sharks... Peace, HN-

Ever since the age of like 4 I have been terrified of deep dark water. It's all because of Jaws, I watched it at the age of 3 or 4 and had nightmares for years. I don't mind swimming in pools, but a lake or ocean ... I flip out. I have goosebumps now just thinkin bout it......I'm pretty sure I have a clinical fear of dark water, cuz when I fall off a jet ski, I go psycho.

i was in hawaii(maui actually lol) quite a few years ago and i was out boogy boardin and i saw this 2-foot shark on the bottom.i thought about reaching down and grabbin it cuz the water was so shallow.woulda been kinda cool to catch than bring it on shore and whack it a few times.than when people would ask me what i did in hawaii i could say i killed a shark with my bare hands lol.it woulda more than likely bit my hand off but i almost did do it,it swam into deeper water before i could grab it.
