I have been to Bakersfield....and the best thing going for it, as far as I can tell, is that there are places worse. I've never been sober in California so my opinion of the place may be warped.

among myself and those close to me it is known as The Armpit Of The Earth.

ive actually become sorta-knowledgeable, as far as gettin around that town, ive broken down more than once there while passing thru on various trips.

the last time i broke down there my friend and i happened to have our mountain bikes (we were on a trip to bullhead city/ needles to go biking)

...but anyway we had bikes so we were able to get around, i kicked some dudes butt in pool at a bar and won enough to pay for my drinks, so it worked out...

but it still sucks in general as a town.

In addition to San Diego, check out SLO (San Luis Obispo)..college town mostly. My friend lives there and goes to school at Cal Poly SLO and the people seem down to earth and its a nice town near the coast. Humboldt like the others have said too.. check out anything along the coast north of the bay...

I'll second San Luis Obispo, I stayed there for 3 nights last year. Nice city. Found a very good breakfast resturant.......good muffins.

hey i am from san diego i think its the best city for stoners just sometimes cops get on your ass a lil but yeah nice good lookin area better then LA hot girls nice places to smoke at, good party scene in P.B. and downtown

Last time I was in LA I went to a BBQ. As we where standing around cooking hot dogs, we could hear gunfire in the distance. No, not the sounds of shotguns like I hear here in Maine, like automatic gunfire......me friends didn't seem to care and I never hear any police didn't seem to resond........yeah LA.

Santa Cruz would be the place to go if your prime concern is marijuana acceptance. They have the Cannibus Club their and you could probably get a referall to buy weed from the club, although im pretty sure its still illegal. Its also a very beautiful laid back coastal town.

The San Diego area is awesome too. Im hoping to get into UCSD. Ive only been their for about 3 days, but it was really nice. I stayed in La Jolla which is a wealthy tourist town. Probably the best in terms of weather and location. Your also 20 minutes from tijuana which is cool. Also Im pretty sure their is a pretty big biotech industry in that area which may be a plus for your area of study.

I have a friend in a PhD program at UCSD, i hope to vistit him within the year.....he also speaks highly of San Diego. Although he does say that it is politicaly conservative....but he is a self proclaimed obsesive compulsive vegan socialist.....
