I'm not sure if anyone here knows anything about the Haight-Ashbury area, but I'm visiting San Francisco this winter vacation and my mother foolishly said that she'd let me run wild in the Haight.

Obviously I'm planning on buying a piece, and I'm sure I'll be fine bringing it back (no metal detector is going to detect glass, so I'll just put it in my pocket, unless that sounds wrong to any of you. It won't be used, so I should be all set with the whole "legal" issue).

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to where to buy my pipe. I saw a place called Pipe Dreams, I think, which is described in an online guide as follows: "Pipe Dreams: Pipe Dreams' motto, "Smoke Shop of the Sixties," refers to its status as the oldest head shop on Haight Street. Aside from an overwhelming choice of glass pipes, ranging in price from $6 to $1,000, the shop carries funky lighter and cigarette cases, hard-rock and punk T-shirts, movie posters and incense holders. 1376 Haight St., (415) 431-3553."

Sounds pretty cool. Anyway, and recommendations or statements like "Don't go to that shop they kill you!"

That sounds like a good plan. When i went to California I ended up buying a glass side car bubbler. I had some hesitations but they guy at the shop assured me that there should not be a problem unless i planned to do something illegal with it. Just keep it clean and you will be fine. I ended up shipping mine in the mail because i did not want to deal with any hassle what so ever, but its up to you. Get something good, nice glass over there is less expencive then nice glass in MA.

Yeah just carry it around with you. When i went to jamaica and bought me a pipe I brought it back used but nothing happend. You should be fine since your not going out of the states so no customs.

Unfortunately, I'm under 18, so I don't really know how they'll deal with it. I figure the bigger the place the more likely they'll turn me down, but I've got a sob story all prepared: "This is the only time in my entire life that I'll be in San Francisco, and I really want to be able to tell my friends that my pipe is from the famous [insert headshop name]." Doubt it'll work, but I'll do what I have to. If Pipe Dreams won't sell me one, there's certainly a plethora of others.

I'd like to travel back in time forty years and visit the Haight in 1964...good luck buying a pipe though man, i tried going into a headshop once in california and they wouldn't even let me come in...though i prolly couldn't pass for anywhere near 18 muahaha..though i'm sure since most of them will be hippies it should be fine. my mom actually took me into a different headshop in california and the lady behind the counter was noticeably stoned and she let me check out all the four hundred dollar glass bongs.

All right, here are a couple suggestions...
-Don't even worry about what store to buy it at. If I had to take a guess, I'd say one in every 3 stores right at the intersection is a headshop. Just poke around in each one and find the best prices.
-I'm not sure if you will be allowed to buy a piece, because this is a VERY well known section of SF for marijuana. They are probably quite careful about selling to minors.
-Off topic: If you happen to be a skateboarder, go into FTC skateshop, undoubtedly the best shop in the city.
-Don't try to buy any weed off the streets there, tons of undercover cops. (I know you said the pipe would be unused, so you won't be smoking probably, but you should know it.)

My mother also foolishly let me run wild in the Haight last summer. But what was the one thing that I swore I wouldn't forget while packing for the trip but I forgot anyways... MONEY! Doh!
