Wet Smuggler Seeks Help, Gets Arrested



A man begging for help led to the arrest of a smuggler on Friday night, reportedly trying to enter the U.S. from Canada with 15 pounds of marijuana.

Police said that at 11 p.m., a resident of Halls Stream Road reported a man pounding on the door and begging for help. Deputy Jeff Noyes arrived a short while later, he said, and the man ran to him, frozen and wet, begging for assistance. The man, Joshua T. Feyes, 27, of Burlington, Vt., told Deputy Noyes that he had fallen into the river.

Border Patrol Agents were called in to investigate the suspected illegal crossing, and members of the Colebrook Ambulance and Beecher Falls Rescue were called to assist Mr. Feyes. New Hampshire State Police also arrived to assist with the investigation, and Mr. Feyes was treated for hypothermia.

He allegedly admitted to police that he had come across the border with a bag of marijuana weighing 15 pounds, and described it at length. Police found the bag floating in the river a short while later. As of yesterday, Mr. Feyes was housed at the Northeastern Vermont Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,500 cash bail, and was to be arraigned in court today, January 19.
