Hey everybody, I know i have always not thought much about threads like the one i am about to post but here it goes.
I am a college student and I live in the dorms. I dont smoke in my room and my room mate doesnt smoke but is cool with me doing it. So out of nowhere one after noon two cops and two housing people show up saying someone told them i had pot. they searched and found a bowl and a roller. They didn't find any weed although both of them over looked a joint.They charged me with prefenilia and took the stuff.They said they would turn it over to the campus judicial system. I am just looking for other peoples story and results that have been in a simular sitution. Thanks and sorry for the long post.

That's messed up! What was thier probable cause? I mean they can't just be like, "I bet this guy has weed, lets search his room." I don't know about you, but that seems like a total invasion of privacy to me.

Tell them to **** themselves and get your stuff back.

Yeah man i used to live in the dorms and they would do that to some of my friends. As long as they get a tip they can search cause its not your property and if you go to a public college its state owned so your on state property and they can do whatever i had a friend get caught with a qp and he had to go infront of the school judicial board and got kicked out

Its totally true... youre rights are soo messed up at school. It's like they dont exist, which is total bull****.
But if someone calls "secret witness" thats their probable cause. Thats what happened to me at school, some kid said something and they searched me and found it. Pretty sh!tty...

Okay let me give you advice from the mouth of experience.

Your roomate called them. I almost guarantee it- mine did after being fine with it for a semester and a half. They need no reason other than your roomate calling to raid your room and search.

Campus judicial is better than any REAL judicial in the world. Your gunna talk to your dean and pray hes an easy guy. You run risks of losing your scholarships, suspension, or expulsion depending on how your school is. Personally, I was slapped on the wrist and put on probation (although i dont have to piss or talk to anyone or anything till the end [was 1 year long]). Btw- theyll make you sweat (at least they did here) it took a little over 2 weeks to actually get my letter saying i had to speak to the dean. NO NEWS IS STANDARD = ITS NOT GOOD NEWS , ITS NOT BAD NEWS. Focus on your classwork and stuff- its not the end of the world yet.

Your gunna want to keep everything out of the room for at least two - three weeks. This is because your roomate is prone to recalling them again (again, experience) and they may come back on reasons of "we were told he had a sack, we didnt find it, perhaps it was hidden" sadly, thats good enough for campus cops. Now heres how ya know if your roomate ratted- a lack of his presence. If you see him abnormally short amounts of time or none at all he did it.

How to deal with the interview- be honest with the dean. Tell him they got everything you had, any marijuana you had was previously consumed. You realize it was a VERY bad decision. Explain you understand the possible reprecussions on your reputation, grades, expenses, etc. I managed to not even have my parents notified by giving a sob story about how I know college is my only shot at survival in this world and I didnt want to let MJ screw it up. I also assured him I had quit and no more paraphenelia or anything.

If your dean is an easy going guy (like man) opt for him to handle it. I wouldnt ever opt for a teacher or peer tribunal or having it dealt with by the city.


Be confident and respectful. Dont try to tell him the rules or explain you were setup or anything. It wont fly, and it wont ease your pain.

Good luck man. Keep us (at least me in PMs) updated on the situation. Oh- and dont toke up till after this is over with man. I ripped a few bongs the two or three days after it happened to me before realizing how dumb it was.

Not too familiar with the laws regarding dorm rooms are you? It doesn't matter if they have permission, or even porbable cause. The dorms are on school property, and can be searched any time a school official says its ok. You have no expectation of privacy. Think of it as your locker in high school. Even though its "yours" it doesn't belong to you and it can be searched whenver the school decides to do it. Your dorm room is basically the same type of deal. While it may be "your" room, its actually college property, and is subject to search at any time. It may not seem "fair" but under the law, its certainly legal. Telling them to "**** themselves" isn't going to get anything back or the charges dropped. That line of thinking may work in your fantasy world, but is completely useless in this situation in the real world. What happened sucked, but it was 100% legal. Thats why I suggest people in dorms go to extremes when stashing their illegal items, because you never know when that knock on your door may come, and if you don't answer, they'll feel free to let themselves in.....

Another good point to bring up is, thats even though you felt that your "rights" were violated, just remember that something illegal WAS found; in this instance as far as colleges & school in general goes; the Ends do Justify the Means.

If Jamz900 stash had not been found in the search he MIGHT (stress MIGHT) have a leg to stand on, and claim he was set up, retribution, profiling, etc. The school in whole would have been more likely to ignore any future "tips" without concrete proof, and he would have been left alone to toke in happy bliss.

First off thanks for the support,
I have decided to stop for a while and have taken everything out of my room. I am setting up a meeting with the housing director who was there for the search to talk about it. I am only getting charged with perfinalia so hopefully they will go easier on me, right now the worst thing that might happen is my housing contract might get cancled, so i would be at a loss of money and a place to stay. thanks again and I will keep everybody updated.

No, I'm definately not. It just seems so wrong but I do see how, from a legal sense, it could be just fine. Good stuff to know if I ever end up stuck in a dorm. Gracias.
