This is a cool OLD thread that keeps going. I am a long time member but rarely post, Im back now though because I am moving to Faibanks Feb 9th. I took a really good job up there teaching (computer software), needless to say I am stoked to live in a state where my plants will be semi-safe.......anyone in Fairbanks hit me up via PM, its always nice to have friends in a new place.

Peace

Yep, I'll be moved to Anchorage on the 29th of this month. Spiral and I are good friends so if you're a friend of his you're a friend of mine!

Ive got some questions for you Alaskans.

How much would I have to earn to pay for room and board? I'd like to be able to live off the land for a while and become independent. Would it be hard to become self sufficient? And what would be a typical job for an Alaskan vagabond?

You just read Into the Wild, didn't you?

Self-sufficient in Alaska? Dude.... not likely. Your going to have to live in some sort of community. You can't grow much out here, and their isn't a whole lot to live off of, unless your going to follow a Caribou herd or do some crazy ass Moose hunt and camp out the winter.... seriously, you gotta think about something like that.

Head out to a village and work on a fishing vessel, if your fit and young (16+) you might be able to find a captain who would take in a greenhorn (first year at sea). A lot of captains are actually internet savvy and post job offerings online.

Other than the fishing industry, their is always the timber and mining industry.... I know a lot of people in the latter. They generally work 2 weeks on 1 off, with varying schedules. Long hard hours, but they make a lot of money. I hope you don't mind pillaging mother natures wonders.

To be honest though, this state has a lot to offer, and being a 'vagabond' isn't exactly something you'd want.... find some kickass place and make it your home dude, before everyone else flocks here.
