it goes both ways. the people who are real seem all the better. but the people who suck suck all the more. the best way to remain yourself is not to give a shit about what other people think of you. only to a certain extent, thought, dont be stupid about it.

Myself, I am not phoney at all. What you see is what you get. As for other people, I've seen my fair share of people who were not real friends. I know who my real friends are, and I tend to stick by them.

Phonies, fakes, and flakes can go to hell. Ever since I started college last semester, I have seen so many phony people. People who act like we're friends for a while, and then suddenly start acting bitchy. They just pull really dumb shit and it totally fucks up our friendship. It seems like I'm surrounded by idiots in college. At home I have a large circle of friends who I can depend on, and vice versa. I was definetely blind to these things before I started smoking.

Oh yeah, I don't necessarily believe people with money are more likely to be fake.. Trust me, I grew up in an area where the average income was over 100 grand and you cant get a house for under $1 million; my parents make at least $300,000 combined. Sure, you have a few fakes here and there, but generally everyone is really friendly and outgoing. We have BBQ's, bonfires, the beach, smoke alot of chronic, have dinner parties, and just love life. I now go to school in a country (Ireland) that is nowhere near as wealthy as my hometown. Everyone is an alcoholic and only cares about themselves. Genuine people are really hard to find. Majority of people here are not rich at all and they are fucking BITCHY!!! I mean it too! I've literally been called a 'rich bitch' and a 'California posh bitch' to my face!! I'm just trying to make friends and enjoy my time in Ireland, right?! But instead I am confronted with people who act like they like me, and then decide I am 'too good' for them. WTF!!

Oh, and the worst part of all is WHY they think I'm a 'rich bitch' - ever seen Donnie Darko? A few 'friends' and I were watching it last semester. At the beginning, when he's riding his bike through the neighborhood, I said 'Oh, that looks just like my hometown.' Then, a month later, they tell me THAT is the reason I'm a rich bitch. It's like they're fucking jealous or something!! All I said was that scene looks like my hometown...and now all this bs cause of one fucking comment. At least I'm meeting more chill people now..

So basically, money/class/status doesnt matter. If you're gonna be a phony and a fake, get a life.

Dude, that sucks Erik. You're making me a little bit nervous about studying in Ireland next semester!

Like troublemaker (? I think it was, anyway) said, I personally tend to seem pretty antisocial until you really get to know me. Not that I'm unfriendly, I know how to chill with random people and I like chatting to people I don't know well, but it's going to take a long while before I really open up to anyone. That also goes hand in hand with my existentialist outlook - I think that any problems in my life are ones that I created, and therefore I alone can fix them and it's unfair to bring others into the mix and put undue stress on them. (This is just applicable to myself; I'd never look down on another person asking for help and I'm never hesitant to give it, it's just that I personally feel like it's unfair to put stress on other people when it's ultimately my responsibility and mine alone to be okay with myself and my actions.)

But even in the sense of me just being totally comfortable with a person, it takes a while. Example: I've been hanging out with this guy in two of my classes for like three months now, three months of seeing him almost every day, and I'm only now just starting to feel really comfortable hanging out with him. It takes months if not years, at least for me.

I think that most of the "phoneys" are just people who are a bit hesitant to put themselves out there right from the start. Of course when you get friendly with someone you're going to find out more about them than you would have just talking to them a few times. It's just that sometimes you find out that they're not the kind of person you hoped they'd be.

I'm not trying to make you nervous! Ireland really is awesome and there are lots of fun people - just not on my course. I love my course (Irish music) but damn, the people get to me sometimes. They seem to think Americans are dramatic (which we can be) but the Irish can really start some shit, especially when alcohol is involved.

Aren't you going to Maynooth? Is that in County Meath? You'll be right near Dublin, I'm sure people are more cultured there. I'm in Limerick, which is basically 60,000 people in the middle of the country. I havent been around people this ignorant since I lived in southern Maryland. Limerick also has a reputation as the roughest city in Ireland. So dont feel scared!!

Default very true

the only reason why i am posting in here is because you have struck a strong topic, a very good one indeed. personally, i have never smoked pot nor do i intend to but i have always gotten along with people who do. on the topic of phony people, i hate to say it but they are everywhere and they disrupt fun-loving, happy people all the time. phony people exist mainly because of their own self-hatred that isn't quite obvious to themselves, so they solve this by becoming some pseudo character that they believe they are. they loathe truth and anything that believes in it, desires it, or represents it. the problem multiplies when these people believe they are invisible and walk around as if they aren't the most obtuse morons in the world, trying to project their self-hatred as if somehow it's your problem. i believe the "street" term would be "frontin'". now is this only an american problem? i am not sure, but i've been to many other countries and self-hatred seems to be stronger here than anywhere else. some people just hate peace. what's obvious to me these days is that disfunction is becoming the norm and accepted as if we are all supposed to be obtuse, inbred, and self-centered. a proper point to be made here is this: we as human beings must accept or get a a grip of is hate is everywhere, we all hate someone or something, but it is when you deny this fact, when it festers in your soul and manifests itself in mental disorders and physical problems, people start thinking up is down, left is right, and so on. when people take denial to the extreme, hell will always break loose and a blame game begins. this is no longer about what america represents (many people say "freedom") this is about everyone's individual right to live in peace (hating yourself and shoving it down someone else's throat is not peace). for someone to hate truth enough to seek it out and destroy it is a disease, love yourself and then you can find out what you hate, not vice -versa. leave bizarro world for the comics. when individuals begin believing "hate is freedom", we all need to then sit down and start re-defining some words again. if you're proud of being an idiot maybe we need to start assigning locations where like-minded people can live together in retarded peace. boy, it would sure be sad if that is the U.S.A. currently.
