| Are any smokers going to Memphis in May this weekend? Well, duh, I know they're going to be there, I'm just wondering are any of you all going. For those who don't know, Memphis in May is an annual event, famous for world class barbeque and its music festival. There's also a few other events, but these two are the most popular. I'm going to see 36 Mafia. It was either them or George Clinton. I'd love to see both, but my lil bro wants to go (he's only into rap, he isn't at the age where all music can be appreciated) and they perform on different dates. anyway, I love going to open air concerts. Lots of fresh air, perfect smoking environment. I'm kinda nervous, but I'm going to bring one anyway, and if I smell something good in the air, I'm gonna increase the volume.

| Beale St Music Festival is usually the 1st of may? I was working ZZ top in 03 or 04 at Beale st festival in memphis. It was may 2-4. There was 5? stages at least. All along the mississippi riverwalk were band after band playing bluegrass to rap. It was the day that jackson tenn got hit w/that big ass tornado. We all passed through the tornado winds leaveing memphis on I-40 towards nashville. Hope you have fun. Atlanta got rid of it's music midtown. I was wondering if memphis followed suit w/the beale st festival? Hope not. |

| You're probably right about the may 1st thing. This year it's starting on the fifth. The music festival is still going on strong. IMO, the reason for it's longevity is it's majority white. In the past, there was a strong black presense, but things change. I enjoy music, so I don't care what color is there, but that's my opinion of why it's survived for so long. Case in point, there was recently an event in town celebrating a local rapper's album release. Unfortuantely, the police felt like there were too many "people" blocking the streets or whatever. But the news played the police tapes, and there was a real condescension in their voices. First she tells the precinct, to "send a couple of cars." Dude responds saying "we'll take a few people to jail to teach them a lesson" Then 2 minutes later, "send ALL UNITS!!...people are everywhere...ALL UNITS!!" Later, they're laughing and one guy asks "I wonder how much a babysitter costs" To me that's unacceptable police behavior, but cops have waayyy too much power for any real change. |
