I'm trying to think... In a normal social setting, when a group of people get together and 'hang out' - when they're not smoking weed (or drinking, either) - what do they do?

More specifically, I'm thinking about that asshole group of college kids who are in all the "drug are bad" kind of groups on campus - the kind that actually hold meetings and discuss their hatred of anything intoxicating. You know, the ones who swear sober is more fun. What do they do?

When I was younger, before I ever smoked weed, my friends and I would get together and go to the mall, get dinner, see movies, etc - basically any kind of normal stuff for high school aged kids. We were having fun and keeping ourselves entertained without any weed and that was cool then. Now we've kind of grown out of that. Walking around the mall with a group of people 19-25 while a bunch of 12 year old mall rats are littering the place would not be any fun.

Now, it seems like 99% of the time when I get together with a group of people, we're smoking weed. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, actually it's pretty awesome. My point is that I just cannot imagine having so much fun if, rather than sitting around and talking while passing a bong and a couple bowls we just sat around and talked while totally sober.

What do you even tell your parents you've been doing when you go out? I really don't say much more than "I'm going out, I won't be back too late" and that's that. What kind of excuse would I give so as to make it sound like my friends and I did anything besides just sit around a kitchen table all night smoking weed? Playing videogames? Watching movies? I feel like that isn't even a logical excuse. Why would I leave and return to the house at all kinds of crazy hours if we were really just sitting around watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith? My parents, God help them if they ever asked me what I'm doing till sunrise, 'cause there's no way they'd believe I was watching movies till 6am.

When you're younger [than college age], it's cool to go to the mall or get ice cream; when you're older [after college], it's different because people work and they have their own homes, for the most part.

My point is: what do those annoyingly proud sober kids do when they're in my age range (say 18-24) if they're not getting drunk or high? Do groups of people get together for parties where no one is getting wasted?

I think I've been smoking weed socially for so long (again, I don't think that's a bad thing) that I can't picture myself doing the same things if weed wasn't mixed into the equation.


I don't know... something I thought about tonight while sitting around a kitchen table and smoking weed for a few hours with two of my friends. We weren't watching TV or playing cards, we were just talking and getting stoned when it occured to me that if we weren't getting stoned, what would we be doing?

Yeah haha we basically sit around and smoke weed too lol. Things I tell my parents are that I'm going to a late movie (gives you until at least 1am) and then spending the night somewhere or going to play videogames or hang out and then spending the night somewhere. With my friends who don't smoke we usualy just chill and watch movies or tv or talk or whatever.

ya bro i can relate to you man. i remember the days when i was all anti drug. my freinds and i would just go to the mall, like you said and go to the movies and eat out and stuff. but now we do the exact opposite. we hang low and fly high.

I'm in college, and while it's hard to find time NOT to be high, I often am found doing homework, and studying for tests during the hours normal people sleep. I do this with the assistance of drugs (Adderall, can't pass without it!)

Hmm. What do I do when I'm not smoking? I'm drinking. But I do a lot of things that don't involve smoking. I go to the casino. I go to the bar. I go to the club. I go out on the boat with Rick, where we wakeboard, tube, or ski. I hang out with friends and just chill, watch some TV. I go out to restaurants. To sports bars. I watch football or other sports-related events with friends, either at their house, or we go to the game. I like to BBQ and grill out. Go swimming or catch some rays. Just stuff like that.

I realize now that that is basically all i ever do with my friends. I go to someone's house, buy weed, get high. That's always how it is. I've often wondered what people do when they are just "hanging out". I'm still in high school so i know quite a few people who hang out and don't smoke weed. I've asked a few of them and mostly it sounds extremely boring to me. I guess i may seem antisocial to some people because i only hang out with my close group of friends, but in reality it's just cause i wanna smoke some weed!

I think today i shall take a survey at my school and see what everyone is doing this fine friday night.

First of all, I don't do drugs. I smoke marijuana. In my eyes, there's a huge distinction, but to others, it's a matter of semantics.

I do the same things I do when I'm high, like HL said.

I go to races as often as I can.
I watch races on TV.
I write to my blog (http://mythroughtsareracing.blogspot.com)
I work on computers for fun and profit.
I tinker with the PC in my truck.
I drive and explore this city.
I go to museums.
I sit in the mall and people-watch... (OK, I'm a dirty old man and I enjoy watching all the rich young hotties at the Galleria - Ya caught me! )
I hang out with friends and talk shit over beers. (I'm a beer snob and enjoy microbrews and imports)
I take roadtrips.
I swim.

That's all I can think of this early in the morning. I need more coffee.

Hmm, this is a good point because I have been faced with this situation over the past four weeks now. I went from getting off work at 5 and coming home to a group of friends and talking over a nice blunt. We'd always get lit and freestyle, play videogames, or just chill on the front porch. Also, we'd go on a cruise for an hour or so and listen to some music or freestlye some more. It was great, and I couldnt think of anything better to do with my time. Now that I cant do that kinda stuff for a while, I get off work and watch tv mainly. I have a little goped engine project that Im working on, but when thats done here soon, its back to the couch I guess. The only exciting thing that I do is go to eat or buy something from Wal-Mart. But yea, being sober, I realized that weed just took the place of boredom. I was never bored getting ripped, but now that is over so I stay bored.

Well, since I don't smoke pot, I think I can give you some insight into this.

When we socialize, we:

Go to friends homes and play cards or a board game - good for a winter night

Take a walk in the pasture and look at the baby cows - good for a spring afternoon

Invite a group of friends over for a football party, serve deep fried, freshly caught perch - good for any fall Sunday afternoon.

Go fishing - good anytime

Go hunting - good in season

Go out to dinner with friends - good for a night out

Go see a movie - good for the one-on-one socializing

Go with 3-4 of my best buds and check out all the dollar stores and garage sales - good for a saturday afternoon

Get involved with volunteer activities - good for whenever they need you.

Phone long distance family - good when there's nothing on TV

Write a letter, pay bills, do the grocery shopping, do the laundry, sweep the floor, change the oil in the car, walk the dog, go to work, do what everyone else does, just do it sober instead of stoned.
