George Michael said in an interview (which he gave while smokin a doobie), "If I'd drunk as much as I'd smoked, my God, I'd look like Keith Richards." Which is hilarious, and a great point, but.... :-)

The former Wham! frontman toked away during a taped chat shot in Madrid and set to air Oct. 31 on Britain's South Bank Show Special , proving to viewers that he meant it when he said the "stuff keeps me sane and happy. I could write without it…if I were sane and happy."

While who knows how many people are going to cheer when they hear Michael say that, the pop singer's actions prompted a U.K. mental health organization to brand the 43-year-old "stupid and naive" for lighting up on TV.

"As a huge international star any public comments will draw enormous attention," said Paul Corry, spokesman for mental health charity Rethink. "Cannabis is not a risk-free drug. For a significant minority of people, it is a trigger for developing a severe long-term mental illness like schizophrenia."
Is that why I've been feeling funny lately? I'm a schizo because I've smoked a little cannabis? Damn.

Just kidding.

Seriously though, what exactly constitutes "signifigiant minority?" I'd like to see those figures in hard numbers. How many people have actually developed schizophrenia after smoking weed? That's bullshit!

I don't mind George Michael so much as a spokesman for marijuana, what I do mind is that people like Paul Corry from Rethink actually believe the drug is that bad. Come on now, like's an herb, like Rosemary or Sage. You can sprinkle a little on your food like parsley and make it taste just...magical. I don't anticipate that anyone has ever become schizophrenic simply from toking a time or two. Perhaps the drug lifted the curtain on some problems that were already there and waiting to surface, but that you can't blame on the drug.

Exactly. Correlation doesn't indicate causation. Science 101.

Although, I do have to say---in all fairness---the fact that pot is "natural" doesn't necessarily mean it's good for you, of course. I wouldn't want to smoke a bowl of "natural" poison ivy. :-)

Is that even a 'bad' thing? It would seem positive to me, realizing our problems so we can correct them.

No doubt. And I have no trouble believing George Michael when he says he would be a lot worse for wear if it weren't for pot.

I know this is old and all..

but

"For a significant minority of people,"

...a 'SIGNIFICANT'..... 'MINORITY'... .which is it guys I mean really.. .. Is this minority THAT important? or is there a HUGE AMOUNT... of minority.. .. or what?

I think that the "minority of people" who would get schitzophrenia are the ones who smoke weed and think that it is too strong for them. I guess there are people who aren't as secure in their identities, and it wouldn't take something as strong as, say, mush, for them to lose it.
