2 third-graders arrested on pot charges at Port St. Lucie school

PORT ST. LUCIE – Two third-graders have been arrested at an elementary school after they were caught with 15 bags of marijuana.

The two boys, both age 9, were charged Monday with felony possession of pot and were automatically suspended from River’s Edge Elementary for 10 days. During that period, the School Board will decide if the children should be permanently expelled. Both boys were released into their parents’ custody.

No word on where the marijuana came from, but one of the third graders was carrying three small plastic baggies while the other had 12, police said. Both boys said they found the marijuana on the ground.

The case broke when a student told a lunch-room worker about the drugs and the 9-year-olds on Monday. The aide, in turn, notified school officials, who called in police a short time later.

Did they find it? Were they planning to sell it? Would this happen if marijuana was legalized and being sold through controlled dispersal like cigarettes -- come to think of it, when was the last time you heard of 9 year olds selling cigarettes tot heir friends? ... It isn't a gun, but it is still bad. Young kids don't need to have anything as powerful as marijuana.

and, no one needs to have it at a school.

It is just plain wrong! There is no way to justify it. No one would feel it is ok for 9 year olds to have cigs or drink alcohol so why should mj be any different?

By the way, the bags were a gram each. Most people read 15 bags and assume they were decent size bags, leading you to believe the amounts involved were greater... not much less shocking, but a good example of how headlines can be manipulated.

Also, turns out the one with three got his on the bus from the one with 12, and although they said they found them on the ground, they later said they got them from a teenager. So that's who the authorities are looking for right now.
