| TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY: Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona ) who created the "tent city jail": He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies. He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination. He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs. He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back." He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place. More on the Arizona Sheriff: With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts. On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before. Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks. "It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane." Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!" Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves. Sheriff Joe was just reelected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona . * the above was sent to me today and I couldnt belive this when I read it but have any of you heard of this shit OMG.

| If there weren't people getting thrown in jail for ridiculous crimes like cultivation, vandalism, and other minor offenses, I probably wouldn't have a problem with this guy's system at all. I'm pretty liberal, but I have low tolerance for a softcore prison system. I say make a lot of minor crimes punishable by fines and community service, then leave real prison - tent city prison - for the robbers, murderers, and thugs. Sure, people are going to bitch that it's cruel and unusual, but I don't disagree with forcing convicts to give back to society through manual labor or chain gangs. Why should I have to pay taxdollars that I earned working my rear off at a job as a decent, relatively law-abiding citizen to have some asshole sit around and watch cable TV all day? Maybe if jail sucked a little more, people would try harder to avoid going there, and would consequently be less willing to pull the trigger in violent crimes. Think about it - anal rape AND no coffee? That's not prison, that's hell. I'm of the opinion that if I have to pay to punish you when I could be putting that money towards education and/or the betterment of humanity, you should really get punished... I mean, seriously - people are more than willing to take TV privileges away from a child that has consistently bad behavior, but you wouldn't do it to a grown man who shot someone in a robbery? That's just ridiculous to me. Only letting prisoners get the Disney Channel is NOT torture. I say they should make ALL convicts pick up highway trash and build homes in Habitat for Humanity. Put them to work at something that's actually constructive for society.

| I've heard of this guy before and I think he's fabulous. It got to a point where you could have a better standard of living being in a prison. It's supposed to be punishment and yet they make is so comfortable in prison that people would rather go back then get a job and be a productive citizen. I think the all the prisoners should be doing some sort of work to give back to the community that has to pay to feed them.

he is an ignorant fool, he wanted to make a checkpoint in phoenix to randomly search people for drugs, which is un-constitutional, but it took him a while to realise you can't stop people for no reason and tear apart their car for a 20 bag of weed fuck joe, hes a disgrace and i hope he gets a heart attack from stuffing his fat face in with donuts while prisoners who get busted for little cases such as weed or w/e have to suffer in 138 degrees and eat nasty bologna sandwiches, he got re-elected? shit i hate this town, bunch of fools for re-electing him | |

| No problem here. I mean, fuck, it's prison/jail, it's not supposed to be nice. And people volunteer for the chain gangs if i recall correctly, so they can get out earlier. At least that's what the show i watched that had Tent City in it said. Never been so i wouldn't know for sure. Quote:

| regardless of who he is...and i know jail or prison or whatever isn't supposed to be easy, but this is some fucked up form of punishment....i'd like to see him do a week in this, his own tent city. regardless of the crime committed, my problem is that everyone gets the same treatment whether they're in there for possession or a double murder. he's an asshole, simple as that....he needs his ass stomped into the ground.
