Ok get this:

There is a man in Nashville that pretty much is homeless, everyone thinks he is homeless, but he is just batshit crazy.

He used to be a big time record producer or something and now he plays the guitar outside of the old spaghetti factory.

I always give him my change if i have any.

I read somewhere that homeless people in big cities make something like $200 a day by just asking for change. The sad part is most of them just buy drugs/booze with it instead of trying to change their lives with it.

I had a teacher in Psychology who said that the majority of homeless people are homeless because they are, in fact, mentally disabled. She told us a story of a woman who lived in houses until they got too filthy to live in, then bought another house, until she was broke and homeless. Also I've heard of homeless people having thousands of dollars hoarded by the time they die.

I do hate seeing people begging when they don't need it, though. It's a boy who cried wolf situation, the people who actually need help might not end up getting it. It sickens me to see people begging for non-essentials.

My wife, on one of her first visits to the area, felt bad for a guy because he askedher for some money to get a sandwhich....I gave her "the eye" but she did it anyway....we went to grab a soda, and wouldn't ya know it.....that guy turned into Speedy Gonzales once he had that dollar in his hand. By the time we made it to the regsiter, he was in line AHEAD OF US, with a 40 oz of Hurricane malt liquor. Since then, she's learned to ignore to beggers! If you want to see what kind of peple they really are, instead of giving them money, offer to buy them some food......the truely hungry will appreciate it, and the drunks, addicts, and whatnot will look at you with disgust or start swearing. its a quick and easy test to see who's hungry and who just wants their next fix.

On a related note, I saw some beggers along the interstate the other day, with a "Will work for food" sign. What struck me as ironic was one was talking on a a cell phone, and the other was puffing away on a cigarette. Sorry, but if you can afford phones and smokes, you don't need me to buy you lunch!!!

That's why I like (well, not like but appreciate the honesty) of this homeless guy in Seattle who's sign says. "need money for beer"

Sure you may be less likely to give him money but I would rather give someone money for booze that straight up says it's going to bboze. Rather someone who claims the need food money ( like in TM42's story) and then buys booze anyways.

My mom used to own a restaurant and she'd give some food or a little work to those in need.

Bumping this thread because I wanted to laugh about an encounter I had with a homeless woman in the city last weekend.

So, I'm walking by her with two of my friends. And at first she looks like a blob on the side of the street cause she's sleeping curled up in some blankets and stuff.

Right when we're in front of her, she leans up and yells "Hey, I'm homeless! Give me thirty dollars!"

I laughed right in her dirty old face. What a demand! It was so funny.

We kept walking, and she's shouting to us as we go, "Give me thir--no, give me forty dollars! I'm homeless!"

That is probably correct. In the old days, indigent mentally disabled people were housed in state mental hospitals. These were generally awful places and couldn't afford to be any better because they weren't allocated the funds to fix things up.

Back in the 70s there was a movement to stop locking up people just because they were too crazy to function in society. A lot of crazy people were put out on the streets and the institutions in which they had lived were closed down.

Another big reason for homelessness is Americans' propensity for living beyond their means. They skate by each month barely able to pay the interest on all their debts. It seems like there's a payday loan shop on every corner! If you frequently can't get from paycheck to paycheck without borrowing money, you need to learn some basic economics. Something happens that interrupts these people's cash flow and pretty soon they're sleeping on the sidewalk.

I don't give money to beggars. My experience has been that they'll take whatever I give and spend it on wine. Instead, I contribute to shelters that give these poor folks a warm place to sleep and a nutritious meal.
