| so i was in downtown today, and there was this homeless couple on the street, well, i'm pretty sure they were homeless because the girl was asking everyone if they would give her some money, and both had some raggy clothes on, they were all muddy and dirty and looked like they hadn't showered for daaays. so before i get posts saying they were probably hitch hikers or something, i just wanted to say i hope she's still not on the street. she's probably one of the prettiest girls i've seen for a while. she had some wicked dread locks. and somehow, even though i usually don't think cigarette smoking is attractive, the way she was smoking hers made her look all the more ... uh, you know, cool or whatever. her boyfriend looked like a crack addict, though. he had needle marks all over his arms and a little on his legs. i gave her some icecream. and sorry if this didn't make sense. *sigh* oh well.. |

| yeah, that's sad. people living in poverty or who've just have make me feel so bad... which is one of the many reasons why i've signed up for mentoring through my university at one of the local elementary schools. i'm so excited about it. my house this summer was close to a little VP convenience store, and there was an old guy who rode a tricycle with a little wagon attached to the back of it that is there day and night. occasionally he'd go around and ask or just pick up cans and kegs and load them into his wagon to take them to recycling for money. he'd also ask for change of people at the VP. my friend and i would get stoned and then walk there for munchies or whatever, and we talked to him a few times.. i gave him my change from whatever i bought occasionally. he really was a nice guy, although a bit crazy. it sucks, but also makes me so grateful for what i have and for my family. also makes me want to go out and do something, anything, good for at least one of these people in any way that i can..

| It isn't that I don't have any sympathy for homeless people, but usually they are homeless because they put themselves in that position through drugs, gambling, etc. Although I know some never had the opportunity to a good lifestyle.

| My thoughts exactly. I mean I'm sure some homeless people are homeless because of unpreventable (is that even a word? I doubt it) situations. But I'd be willing to bet the majority are the sole or main person responsible for their situation. I still try to give bums money when I see them on the street though. |

| I agree with you. Homeless people are a touchy subject because you dont know why they are homeless. They might be a heroin addict or just ran into some real shitty luck. When I was around 8 my single mom ran into some money problems not related with drugs. We almost had to live in her car.

| I have sympathy for some, but the obvious beggars, panhandlers, drug addicts and drunks I only give them advice when they ask for change, "Get a job", "Quit abusing/using", etc. What reallllllly really annoys me is the people with these sappy signs that stand on street corners trying to get people to throw money at them. It's like wow, with all the time you stand there doing NOTHING you could be trying to change your life around.

| The homeless people around Nashville are shitheads. No, not all of them, but a good majority are beggars, and get down right rude if you don't have anything for them. One night me and TMG were hanging out around downtown....this black homeless guy came up, asked (incoherently I might add) if WE HAD SOME CHANGE FOR A BURGER. I told the guy I didn't have anything...pulled out a lighter, and said that's all I have buddy. His eyes lit up when he seen the lighter, so I did give that to him. We walked away and he started yelling at us "Hey hey!" I just figured fuck him and went on. On our way heading back towards the car we took the same route...end up passing by the same guy, this time all he managed to blurt out was "DO YOU HAVE A HAMBURGER" this time I said, "We don't have no fucking change or hamburgers...you better back the fuck off" after that he left us alone. He's lucky I didn't give him a knuckle sandwich instead... Don't get me wrong I have a ton of empathy towards most homeless people, but it's guys like that, that give homeless people bad names. We had actually given quite a few homeless people dollars that night, but they were polite and just asked kindly if we had any change as we were passing.

| The homeless people in san francisco are pretty grimy. Its hard to walk down the street with food and not have to fight to keep it. |

| yeah, this girl that i was referring to, she probably put herself in the bad situation with the guy. she was just so... beautiful. it's a shame she wasn't holding a sign or anything, just asking if he had any spare change, but i didn't want to contribute to what may be helping a druggy did i say he was playing his guitar, he wasn't half bad... |

| I grew up in an area with a very high population of Native Americans. We basically lived just over the boarder from on the SD's Indian reservations. The town I went to HS in is full of alcoholic Natives who are routinely begging for change. My wife, on one of her first visits to the area, felt bad for a guy because he askedher for some money to get a sandwhich....I gave her "the eye" but she did it anyway....we went to grab a soda, and wouldn't ya know it.....that guy turned into Speedy Gonzales once he had that dollar in his hand. By the time we made it to the regsiter, he was in line AHEAD OF US, with a 40 oz of Hurricane malt liquor. Since then, she's learned to ignore to beggers! If you want to see what kind of peple they really are, instead of giving them money, offer to buy them some food......the truely hungry will appreciate it, and the drunks, addicts, and whatnot will look at you with disgust or start swearing. its a quick and easy test to see who's hungry and who just wants their next fix. On a related note, I saw some beggers along the interstate the other day, with a "Will work for food" sign. What struck me as ironic was one was talking on a a cell phone, and the other was puffing away on a cigarette. Sorry, but if you can afford phones and smokes, you don't need me to buy you lunch!!!
