Default What is australia like? I might immigrate

Ok, so I am currently in Doha, Qatar studying to be a Mechanical Engineer.

I should have a PHD in ME by around age 28 or so.

I don't want to go back to America to be a criminal in a culture that is socially intolerant to marijuana smokers. I have heard many times... "well if you don't like it here, get out"

So I decided that's actually a pretty good idea. I am looking for places where Marijuana use is culturally tolerated, and doesn't have a non-stop tiring and insane/corrupt political climate where I can live in the future.

What is Australia like? I have seen their move towards cannabis law reform.

I understand it is difficult to obtain citizenship, but I believe as a Mechanical Engineer with a good research background this shouldn't be a big problem.

Also, I cannot get a PHD here in Qatar, so I am also looking for good engineering schools with active graduate programs. I could probably finish my master's here and then complete a PHD program in Australia. That would give me a good opportunity to experience the culture and landscape and such.

Can I ask why you can't get a PhD in Qatar?

They currently do not offer a PHD program here, and do not have any plans. I'm speaking strictly about the school I am at.

Move to British columbia canada bro. Most tolerant place for marijuana ive ever encountered. 17 percent of our country tokes up. Higher % in BC most likely. You wont regret it.

edit:to 60 ft bong who said in a rep message"lol i guess you havent heard of amsterdam"

yea i have .......the percent of tokers per capita is lower there. plus......
I know someone who lives about an hour outside of Amsterdam for their whole life. Hes over here for university. Anyways he says people more openly smoke cannabis here then holland. He says if you do it anywhere but the coffee shops you get hassled by cops. FYi we have "coffee shops" or smoke shops where you can smoke in just like amsterdam. you cant buy at them is the only difference. but if you find the right hookups. its just as good weed if not better for cheaper. EVER HEARD OF VANsterdam>?

It is good to know that there is another Mechanical Engineer on the board. I recently graduated and have started my career. I now what you mean when it comes to the intolerance of marijuana here. I think the fact that we are able to become educated and work competitively in a demanding field helps to end the stigma of the “lazy unproductive stoner”. Is the bud situation better in Qatar? The company I joined has an office in Qatar so this might be a good option for me.

Don't come here for bud, that's for damn sure. Non-Qataris (non-citizens) are dealt with harshly when it comes to laws. Qatar citizens are immune to arrest for all but the worst of crimes. Westerners do get cut a bit of slack... but not a whole lot. I admit I know where to get some hash, but I have refused to do so for fear of ending my career. If you get caught, it's either straight to jail or straight to the airport for deportation.

For example, if traffic police catch you driving with any measurable amount of alcohol in you, they simply take you straight to the airport and put you on a plane right then. I'm going to be an academic monk for a while, but I'll be damn happy when I leave this god forsaken country.

Also, I thought about Canada... but I have seen many disturbing reports of America's influence on Canadian drug law.

Realistically, what is the risk involved for someone wanting a small, private, and personal use grow? Would I run the risk of having to take a piss test if I got a speeding ticket or in an accident. I know in some American states now you can be forced to take a urine test on "suspicion" and simple THC metabolites will garner you a "driving under the influence of drugs" ticket. Not good at all.

I'm looking at Canadian schools now.

Ya, I know what you mean. I see plenty of PHDs in academia who like to drink beer or smoke cigars and nobody bats an eye. Compare a carbon based and neurotoxic fuel to marijuana... and you would think that ganja would be the obvious choice to anyone who values their brain cells. Such is modern culture, huh? Back asswards

No risk of having to take a piss test unless its the companies policy your trying to get hired for. THC metabolites in your blood stream prove that you have been high within the last month. Whether its been 29 days or 1 day, the results will be the same. The charge for impaired driving here is within the last 24 hours .So theres No way to prove that your high unless you admit to it. That is one of the beauty's of marijuana, no breathalizers able to hold up in court. Also the chances of getting caught with a little personal grow are extremely minimal. In BC there are so many large scale grow ups that a small one is of no significance to the police. Meth labs are of more concern also.

Canada wanted to legalize marijuana a long time ago. Americans said okay, this is fine but Were going to inspect every single vehicle that crosses the border from head to toe. Resulting in impossible trade deadlines and so forth. so canada just gave it up. America is always trying to be the bully.
