Yesterday I encountered something I haven't seen in 40 years of smoking.

I've been rolling joints for all that time and I've gotten pretty good at it. I was at a friend's house and he had some fancy high-end weed. He asked me to roll a joint out of it and I did. It was a perfect cylinder, not too loose, not too tight. We fired it up. I took a hit. He took a hit. Then it wouldn't draw anymore.

I did a post-mortem. With the scalpel blade on my pocket knife, I slit open the offending joint from end to end. To my surprise, the weed inside didn't fall into a pile. It remained a cylinder that you could pick up and examine.

Apparently, this stuff was so resinous that the heat of the first two hits melted the resin into a glue that welded the weed together and stopped any possibility of air flow. Has anyone else had this happen? Is there something that can be done about it?

We had that happen but it was quite a while ago. I haven't smoked joints in a long time.

We just smoked it in a bowl. Sticky bud, you gotta love it.

Yes, it has happened to me before and we just smoked it out of a pipe. Which it has also happened that way too but we had to keep poking it to keep it clear.

This happened to me also a little while back. I don't know if it was the resin that did it or what, but it was good bud that my father bought for us. He said it was really good, it just didn't burn well at all and he didn't understand it. I saw exactly what he meant, because after we each take a hit and he passes it back to me, it turns into a game of who has the ambition to try and get this joint lit. I think we spent more time trying to light it then we did actually smoking it. Too bad he doesn't like burning bowls too much.

We ended up vaping it and I've never had a load in a vape that gave so many hits before petering out.

What I'm looking for, though, is a way to roll this kind of weed into a useable joint. My circle has a rule about carrying paraphernalia: we don't. Except for transporting it from where it's purchased, we never carry more than we can swallow in a couple of seconds. The reason why my friend wanted me to roll a joint was that we were going for a walk in the park.

As it turned out, it was a good thing that the joint wouldn't work. When we vaped this weed when we got home, we got so high we couldn't walk. It was a beautiful day for a walk in the park with all of the trees in full autumnal plumage, even without getting high.

One thing that might work is putting a metal/glass rod with a small outer diameter in
the middle of the weed when you go to roll it. Once it's rolled pull the rod out and you
should have no trouble with airflow. It's just a guess though.

Interesting idea! Now all I need is a piece of 14 gauge, teflon-coated steel rod (so the weed won't stick to it when pulling it out). Piano wire would be good, because it's so stiff. Maybe a quick wipe-down with vegetable oil would solve the sticking problem.

If you can`t solve the problem simply by altering your rolling technique I`d suggest sprinkling cigarette tobacco into the mix - if you don`t mind the taste or the nicotine, that is. Also, you could try rolling it ungrounded and pull it apart with your fingers or a pair of scissors. If not, you could try rolling the joint with strips of weed spaced apart laterally across the Rizla. If all else fails, my final suggestion would be not to grind the weed but to break of reasonably large chunks and space them along the Rizla before sprinkling tobacco atop it and rolling as usual. Oh, and best not try all these in a single session.

I'd probably go with something tastier and non-addictive. I don't like inhaling tobacco smoke, although I do appreciate a good cigar from time to time. I'm thinking peppermint leaves. Peppermint has taken over a chunk of land near my back fence and I've got a lot of dried leaves in my pantry.

This happens to me often, at least the cylindrical clogging effect.

I usually roll my joints a little looser when smoking really dank weed because this does happen. The buds bind together choking the joint.

I don't know I don't dissect the joint afterwards just kind of roll the burning joint around between two fingers to loosen up the insides. Seems to do the trick.
