Default Hometown drug bust

Biggest drug bust to date, in my hometown of Whittier. I haven't heard much news from the locals, but it still is pretty interesting.

Three arrested in motel pot bust
Marijuana seized is worth at least $107K
By Melissa Pamer, Staff Writer

WHITTIER - Police arrested three Mexican citizens Thursday night in connection with 43 pounds of marijuana that were found in the trunks of two cars parked next to a Whittier motel.

Just after 8 p.m., a Whittier police corporal was driving on a routine patrol when he witnessed what appeared to be a drug transaction between the men in the parking lot of the Good Night Inn, 10317 Whittier Blvd., officials said.

The men agreed to the corporal's request to search their two cars, which had Mexican license plates. In each vehicle's trunk, the corporal discovered a large bundle of compressed, processed marijuana wrapped in plastic, officials said.

The bust is one of the biggest in the city's recent history, according to authorities.

"It's very large. I don't think we've had a large seizure like this without a search warrant in a long time," said Officer Diana Salazar, a police spokeswoman.

The marijuana is worth between $107,500 and $258,000, depending on quality, officials said.

Ebiel Manzanillo, 35, Jose Torres, 25, and Elias Valdez, 40, were arrested on suspicion of transportation and possession for sales of the pot. The three men, all from the Mexican state of Sinaloa, are in

Whittier jail, officials said.

The suspects will be arraigned Monday in Whittier Superior Court.

The men were in the United States legally and had Mexican passports on them when arrested, Salazar said.

They have no criminal history in the U.S., she added. Police do not yet know of any connections to crime in Mexico, but convictions outside the country won't affect their court cases here, she said.

Officials said similar busts have involved drugs that were smuggled across the border from Mexico. Narcotics detectives are investigating that possibility, but said charges would be the same regardless of the marijuana's origin.

"When we book for transportation, it doesn't matter whether it came across the border or whether it's within the city," Salazar said.

Detectives are also seeking to determine whether the alleged drug exchange was part of a broader criminal scheme.

"Based on the quantity, we would believe it is part of a larger distribution network," Salazar said. "We're determining whether this has any affiliation with anyone else in the city of Whittier or L.A. County."

Detectives believe the marijuana is high quality and worth up to $6,000 per pound. The pot will be sent to the county sheriff's crime lab to determine its quality.

That's a vary good question. You think they would have spent the time to brush up on
the laws before smuggling that much.

Youd be suprised at how many people KNOW they can refuse a search, yet panic and consent when faced with a cop. Still others don't know their rights, and don't realize they don't HAVE to consent. Theres also people who believe that refusing a search IS probable cause, which it is not. However, in today's world, a drug dog is usally only a call away. Refusal may not be probable cause, but its caused more than one officer to be suspicious enough to request a k9 unit to the scene. If the dog hits on your car, thatsa all the probable cause needed to search.

Ah, the ol' shitty Mexican brick weed. Sucks for the Mexicans but you know - doing a drug deal in a parking lot probably isn't the best place. Especially with 40+lb of bud. Luckily this probably won't affect prices or supply in your area (well at least with the shitty weed )

"HUGE BUST!!!" is bullshit. They never get more than 10% of the buds on the market, if i remember correctly. Sometimes it'll be a little harder to find buds for maybe a day...do the police really think that they can stop market supply and demand?

I remember once after a big bust about a year and a half ago, one of our shadier dealers was telling us things would be a little bit more pricey because of the bust. We said fuck that and called a different guy.

Cool

There was a news article here, (well, it still is, just do a search...) about how much the DEA gets every year along the mexican border.....Over a million lbs.! A million lbs. of bud.....

And the shame of it is they destroy it. What if they just took that profit from the sale and did something decent for the poor in this country That's the reason I get so pissed off at this country. I can't remember the last thing they did right.............
