I'm sorry if this is inappropriate, but I remembered these pictures and I thought they might invoke that image you are going for. I dunno, if your going for epic - and customizable you should figure everything out yourself, as oppose to us, but perhaps these will spark some ideas;

You could never go wrong with taking your favorite sci-fi/fantasy characters and putting them in there. Imagine having a Darth Vader among all the chaos? That would be so kickass. Also, maybe you could think of a name for the bus? The Mystery Machine is always a classic

Some how your uncle could make it in to a slick 'logo' for it on the hood or something.

Well I hope this helped, if I were you I would like sketch out a van and start drawing it out.

awesome idea.. i hope your uncle doesnt mind spending a lot of time making this happen cause it sounds really time consuming.

My cousin got a tattoo on his chest of a bear fighting an octopus in heaven, that may or may not be cool when projected to the side of a van.

Broliette, that second pic is gorgeous. I'll see if I cant work something like that in somewhere. and I'll definatly have to have a polar bear punching a lumberjack in the face somewhere on it. I really dig the sort-of-ancient-but-still-high-tech exosuit that Spiral Architect posted above. If anyone has seen the movies FIRE AND ICE or WIZARDS, I want alot of it to be like that, only with better drawings.

I'm also putting that in there for sure. Maybe he'll be on the other side, with a polar bear at his aid, because the lumberjack idea I don't like anymore.
