I work in sales for a fairly large electronics/networking business. Part of my job is to make outside sales calls to our major customers and give quotes on installs, so I come across a wide variety of stuffed suits, and some pretty cool business owners. Today I was with an old lady who owns a major Tech shop and she said she hoped bud would be legalized. My first thought, "I think I just found a new connect, and you know old lady smokers have the kindest!!" But her reasons were twisted and racist!!! She said if it were legal more African Americans, she didn't use that term though, would start looking for jobs as opposed to selling "drugs". She probably counts for 25% of my commision though so I didn't say shit. Would you have?

Depends if you think it's worth your job. I once got yelled at by my boss because I asked a customer, "Are you alright, you look like you might throw-up." I was being insulting to her.

At the very least you could have pointed out other more important factors to why it should be legal...(one's own right to their body, medicine, ect) but you would have compromised your position of your job by taking a stance.

Heh, maybe you could have done it in more of a suggestive manner. Say, "Hey you know what, you should read The Emperor Wears No Clothes, I hear that's an excellent book on cannabis issues."

I guess it's about picking your battles; what's it worth to ya....

I like the book idea--but I just couldn't take her to task on it though because I've got kid so losing my job would be earth shattering.

If this was a strictly personal confrontation, you should call her on her BS.

Since you were on the job and not acting on your own behalf, your personal feelings aren't really relevant. Your job requires that you maintain good relations with your company's customers and it would be irresponsible to endanger that relationship.

I work in a call centre too. It's hard when people get racist, homophobic or sexist. I am not the biggest fan of my job, so if someone is being hateful I will put them in their place. My job is semi-laid back though. I get people complaining a lot about a 17 cent charge that they have to pay each month.. the money goes towards the message relay and TTY services for the hearing impairied.. it's only 17 cents

To me the cannabis issue is almost like parenting. You need to choose your battles wisely and when you do; make sure it's one you can win.

But now look on the bright side, you have a child, you can teach them the truth behind cannabis. You can definitely pick and win that battle
