Without sounding overly dramatic my father told me yesterday that he would kill me.

Some background: My dad was driving and I was the passenger, and he was explaining something to me. I told him I already knew this, and he called me a dumb ass that knows nothing. He started to yell about how I think I know everything, then he says he saw me smile. He begins to bunch me in the legs and then in the face, all the while by not paying attention to the road.

He's lost his temper like this several times but this time it was different. I think he had a nervous breakdown because he started crying and swerving on the road. He then tells me after the last punch that he will have to either beat me to a bloody pulp, or crash the car and kill us both. Luckily we were near my aunts house and he parked the car. I enter and tell her the story, then my father starts telling her that he's going to have to kill me. By this point he's not as hysterical and seems morosely calm.

I honestly do not think this is an idle threat, he's hit me as a child and left me bruised, but he's never threatened death. I've always noticed he's suppressed his hard childhood and has had psychological problems, such as unmerited hostility or aggressiveness. I just don't know what to make of this situation.

You need to tell someone that can help you if he's hit you before, regardless of if he meant what he said or not. Go to one of your family members with your problem, as I dont see you going to the proper authorites since he's your dad.

It seems like you have three choices:
1. Do nothing, be a punching bag, and sleep with one eye open.
2. Bring in law enforcement (go to the cop shop and have them photograph your bruises and contusions).
3. Move away.

This is undoubtedly your best option. The judge should be able to serve a court order requiring him to attend anger management classes and seek counselling for his psychological issues to avoid further sentencing, should you press charges. Other than that, generally bringing it out into the open like that will give you immediate access to social services- the only realistic course you can take.

In either case, your father needs help urgently- he may be more likely to harm himself than harm you. Inform your relatives that you suspect he`s had a mental breakdown and that everybody should keep a close eye on him. You should probably stay with them for a while, too. Has your old man got any close family that could 'look after him'? Best wishes!

The death threat thing btw, if it is serious which I really really doubt then I don't know what to tell you because if someone really wanted to kill you they would just find you. Call the cops or something man he sounds like a god damn creeper.

Don't put up with this man. Noone can expect you to go to the police (although that is a perfectly viable option, and if you're up for it, I'd say go for it) but that doesn't mean you can get out of this situation. Where is your mom and aunt in all this, has she offered to let you live at her house?

Are you 18 yet? If you're planning on going to college, that would obviously solve the problem, but if not, just get a job and find a cheap apartment and a roomate or two. Either way, don't live with this.

You need to get the hell away from him. Either that or kill him before he kills you. Put him in a sleeper hold. No one gets out of a sleeper hold....just kidding. Seriously though, you NEED to put some distance between yourself and your dad. He certainly isn't acting like Ward Cleaver.

Man if my dad ever hit me and actually meant to harm me, I would hit him right back, and hes a big guy. I would seriously go all out on him if hes beating the shit outta me. My dads a nice guy but if he ever, ever tried to harm me I would punch him right in the face a few times then call the cops.

I say you hit him right back from your discription he sounds like hes one of those guys that were pushed around as a kid and now that there an adult they think they can harm u. How old are you by the way. If your 18-ish just put up with this shit until u move out at 19 or 20. If your under 18 call the cops on his ass...
