| First of all, I'm fairly concerned that this hasn't been discussed by the media at all. There isn't really any chance it will hit Earth, but it qualifies as news imo. The asteroid is named TU24, is over 300 meters in diameter and will come a lot closer to earth than most people care for an asteroid to get (close like a 1/2 day later and NY would be wiped off the face of the Earth close). You'd think this would be common knowledge by now, but I'm betting most of you are learning about it for the first time. No need to panic, the chances of it hitting are like 1/25,000,000, the worst we can expect is "possible interference" with the earths magnetosphere. 2007 TU24 Forums -> Asteroid TU24 The Real Danger of TU24 - 2007 TU24 Forums Hypography Science Forums - Asteroid 2007 Tu24 Getting Closer On further investigation the projected distance is much closer than 1.4 lunar, still not expected to hit though. ![]() |

| Thanks Match.....Your right, I wasn't aware of it but now that I am I will look at the whole thing and learn something.... ![]() I do think that all objects in space are affected by the nearest gravitational pull, so small shifts in the projected flight can be expected. It will be interesting to see what effect the moon and earth will have on it....... Why isn't the press reporting it? I would say that they don't want to cause a panic with the drones of the world, and let them be oblivious to the asteroid..... Seems like an answer to me........ ![]() Some Where In Ded Land...........

| I'm glad you've brought this to my attention. Thing that troubles me is, that this comet was predicted 1.4 lunar away and then a day later predicted to be much closer. I just hope that tomorrow it's not reported to be coming right at us. That would be interesting though. |

| I want to reiterate that I'm concerned with the media here, if this near miss isn't making any of the MSM channels, do you think they would cover an asteroid with a very real chance of hitting? If it were just one station reporting or just one station not reporting I would understand. But none of the stations have made as much as a peep about this. If you understand what ratings means in media, you know they have all agreed not to talk about it (it's not exactly hard information to find ya know?), after all if one station did inform the public that station would be guaranteed a 200% jump in viewers, minimum (thats a lot of advertiser money right there). Yet... none of them are covering it. I used to think the MSM was limited in their bias in terms of politics, but this is a new level for me. If they were to report accurately it would be understood that there is no real chance of the Earth being struck, but they haven't and you know they are aware of it (how could they not be?). I'm personally giving up on televised news, I'll be doing my fact-checking online from now on. After all, I want the truth, not what they think I should see. |

| I actually heard about this a little while back, but I can't remember where now. It concerned me, but the fact that main stream media hasn't said anything is odd. I want to say I saw it on one of the Discovery Channels, but not sure. I remember seeing a trajectory that took the asteroid near our satellites.

| Thanks for sharing Lit_match. I haven't heard anything about it (with the recent celebrity death and the election taking up the MSM media's time, it's probably why I haven't seen it). Rather interesting, that certainly is 'close'. I am glad its missing though, I can only imagine the day when they find out an asteroid really will hit earth - the media will hop all over that one before its too late! |

| I seem to recall the media reporting on an asteroid that was/is supposed to come very close to earth.. At the time, they didn't know whether or not it would hit, so it was pretty f'n scary at the time.. This was probably 10 years ago. I believe they said it would pass by/hit Earth in 28 years.. So that's be around 2026. Anyone remember this? Anyway, If I miss the Superbowl, I'm be pissed. Edit: I was off by two years. I was referring to Asteroid 1997XF11, which will pass by Earth in 2028.

| That's not the one to get your panties in a bunch over. There is one that is gonna pass us in 2029, very close. 100% it won't hit, but if it goes through a "gravitational keyhole" then the orbit would shift enough to hit us in 2036. 1/45,000 chance of hitting us in 2036. There hasn't been an asteroid with better odds in a long ass time. 1/45,000 is a super small chance. But really, it's HUGE when compared to other "close call" asteroids like TU24 (1/25,000,000)
