| Well, I have finally said it: Why not? I've been completating it for the past couple of years, with much more seriousness lately. The biggest obstacle is dealing with employment, and my new job really wouldn't care. Most places really wouldn't like you to have dreads, and esspecially wouldn't like it before they've really grown in.... My hair is approaching 4 inches, and it's come in almost as all-natural as can be. I've had long hair before, but never past my shoulders. Growing out my hair has always been pretty bad looking because I used shampoo and conditioner and I also grew it in unevenly. But this time, all of my was half an inch before I started growing it out, as naturally even as it can be. I've also not been using shampoo and conditioner for a while, using soap instead. Makes my hair look better, more full. Anyone have any advice or anything to say?

| I say go for it. I'd wash with a real shampoo first though. The problem with washing hair with soap is that with the typical hard water most people get, the soap reacts with metal ions and forms scum (calcium and magnesium salts), which won't rinse out.

| You should go for it, I have hair that goes a good couple of inches past my shoulders and I'm either dreading it or donating it. If you get dreads and you keep them in good condition then nobody should look down on you because of your dreads. If you are a respectable person then nobody should deny you if you have dreads, and if they do then they aren't worth your time anyways. |

| Dreads look amazing! Guys look cooler and girls become way sexier, I think. I really considered getting dreads a couple years ago, but never went through with it. Partially because I was afraid I wouldn't like them or they wouldn't suit me and partially because I'm a fan of the classic "hippie hair", haha. You just have to weigh all the factors that come up in your situation, man. If you do it though, be sure to post some pics!

| I've contemplated dreads a few time. My hair is a few inches past my shoulders, currently the longest it is has ever been. I just don't think I could go through with it. I take great pride in having really healthy, sleek, and shiny hairy so the last thing I would want it to do is get all matted up and super greasy. Something about having your hair flying everywhere in a cool breeze is just too good to pass up anyway... :P Sure, dreads are fucking awesome. It is however a serious commitment to your hair, expect to have bad hair days continuously until they finally get where you want 'em (this can take months). You mentioned employers looking down on your for dreadlocks, and rest assuredly - they most likely will, sad but true. Also, you have to remember that when you no longer want your dreadlocks, the only real option is to shave it all off - can't undo' em. ![]() I would grow your hair out more before starting the dreadlock phase, that's just my 2 cents - once you realize how great free healthy long flowing locks are, the last thing you'll want to make is a birds nest on your head. ![]()
