| (I know its long, but bare with me) I have a friend who wanted to join the marines out of high school, he wanted to prepare during the summer, and then go when the school year started. He was about 5'7 145 pounds when we started hanging out and he was very shy and timid, also a pussy lol. So during the summer I would mess with him as much as possible, get under his skin, tease him, wrestle with him, punch him, just to toughen him up (in a friendly way... except once). Then my other friend who is a 6'4 marine started running with us, we got up to about 3 1/2 miles without getting to winded, I was a little worse off because I am only 5'3 and pretty hard to keep up with someone who is 6'4. Anyways, the kid was well prepared for boot camp, and ended up being too prepared. Over the last 3 months he has been in, I get letters from him about every 2 weeks, and everytime he said he was "bored, waiting for something exciting". He finally got to call me yesterday.... He said it was easier then anything he has done, he said the DI's couldnt get under his skin because of us always giving him shit, he was the leader in everything because of all the running he did back home, and he was dissapointed that it wasnt any harder. I have heard of marines CRYING to get home, everyone back home is in shock because he blew through it so easily. However I asked him, "If you went to iraq right now would you be prepared?" he said that he only got to shoot 300 rounds, the marine martial arts was a joke, and they didnt teach him any tactics. He said he thought he could have learned more by playing video games. ![]() Joining the marines is suppose to be one of the hardest things you can do, it is suppose to prepare you for fucking war.... I'm glad he is coming back as himself, but when he calls me and is excited because he bought a new laptop instead of excited that he is now officially a marine at 1:00 p.m. pacific time 4-25-2008. Something just seems wrong with this, what do you guys think about all of it? |

| Boot camp is rough and stessful. I think he was well prepared and went into it with his eyes wide open, and that was good. He is a marine and that to him and a lot of others means a great deal...... Some Where In Ded Land............ ![]()

But he is my best friend.... I want my best friend to be prepared for Iraq, he is going active duty. 300 rounds isnt enough to be prepared for a full blown fire fight, hell before he left we went out and shot 600 rounds of .30-06 to help his aim and have some fun. I mean I am sure he has learned quite a bit, but I wish he had that mentality that he could go over there and kick ass like he thought before he went into the marines. | |

| As long as you are in shape and willing to take mental abuse, any boot camp isn't too bad. For somebody that isn't in shape and doesn't have the correct mindset (they can't do that to me!), it can be a living hell. ![]()

| Marine Boot Camp is indeed the most difficult of all the services to get through. Your friend may revel in being called a Badass - because he is now officially one. I remember an NPR report about two months ago that discussed the recruiting woes that all branches of the armed forces are dealing with because of Iraq. One of their "tactics" for helping to increase recruits was to make boot camp a little "lighter" and more "understanding". Though, I can't see the marine corp giving into this type of thought process. My baby boy went through the USAF. They have the easiest boot camp . . . during their "war week? or whatever they call it, they got to sleep in air-conditioned tents. Please tell your friend "thanks" from me. HMH |

| It's physically tough and there are a good deal of mind games involved. They need to strip you of your individuality and make you part of a team that is capable of dying and killing for one another. A unified team is far more dangerous than a group of individuals. |
