Hide your stash and pipe, etc. in a semi-permanently sealed container. Something with screws that can be loosened and stripped until they can be taken out by hand. Small guitar amps are ideal. The big thing here is to make it look like there's no way to get into it. I've been doing this for a long time, and it has worked for me perfectly. (My rents are always in my room, too!) Using a tupperware container is great, and for added defense, bag all your stuff (pipe too), and put it in a wool sock sprayed with cologne (see below).

Also, use a sploof to cut the smell when you smoke. Take a cylinder (toilet paper roll, empty bottle with the bottom cut off) and fill it with dryer sheets or toilet paper sprayed with a cologne or body spray THAT YOU USE NORMALLY. If your mum's on to you, she will notice a strong smell of odd cologne or air freshener as indication that you've been smoking. Exhale through this, slowly. If you need to breathe, take a breath, and continue to exhale through it. Also, if your using anything with a bowl, cover it after you hit. This makes sure it won't smoke any more.

Finally, after you get caught, chill out for about 2 weeks. It sucks, but its totally worth it in the end.
