| I saw earlier today this link Afghanistan Student on Death Row for Reading Internet Article - Switched about how a student in Afghanistan studying journalism was sentenced to death for reading an article online about the role of women in Islam. After much protest by people from different countries, a government official has come out to say he will not be getting the death penalty after all. Afghan government official says that student will not be executed - Asia, World - The Independent How crazy is it that you can be sentenced to death for reading an article online there? I'm glad I don't live there. |

| How crazy is it that the United States is supporting a government that executes people for reading an online article?

| But it seems all the posters here would prefer the Taliban. ![]() You're all so caught up in your anti Bush rhetoric that you sound like you want to go back to the good old days of the Taliban. Whatever type of government they have now is far better than what they had in the past. It takes some time to pull a group of people out of the 14th century. |

| You're making assumptions not backed up by the facts. Things aren't that black-and-white. The US is in a position to make pretty much any demands it wants on the Karzai government, which would collapse in very short order without US financial and military support. |

| There is no doubt about that, however, Islam is the dominating force in that part of the world and it is one of the main reasons that their mentalities are stuck in the 14th century. Changing a culture and their way of thinking is a difficult process. We (the US) are not the first group of outsiders to try and change that part of the world. The British tried and failed. The Russians tried and failed. And now its our turn...yippie. |

What gives you or anyone else the right to change any country? If they are in the 14th century, so be it. As you pointed out... many have tried, many have failed... I'd much rather spend the money we spend on changing dictatorships on fixing out own local problems.

Shib let me knock some sense into you. Sometimes the will of the people need some outside help. Sense these countries are usually ran by murders and just crazy people. These people that would like to have a better life there are usually put to death when they speak out, and also there are people that are undercover advocates to the murderous rulers. Outside help is needed at times even when some think it is not. theres two sides to a sword not one
