Default New York Post Controversial Political Cartoon

Quote:
The New York Post recently published the political cartoon shown here, depicting two white police officers standing over the carcass of a bullet-riddled chimpanzee, with the animal representing the author of the stimulus package. The decision to run this cartoon was irresponsible at best, and hurtful and malicious at worst. It seems unthinkable that an editor of a newspaper would not understand the history of Black folks being depicted as monkeys and apes or the recent spate of death threats against President Obama. Worse, when confronted, Post editor Col Allan dismissed people's concerns as baseless.
Join us in demanding that The Post issue an apology for the decision and their callousness, and fire the editor who allowed this cartoon to go to print.

And heres the cartoon.

What you guys think?

Oh yeah any way A mod can fix my spelling error in the Thread name?

It may be in poor taste...but freedom of speech and expression...I don't know. I don't want to silence anyone, no matter how wrong their humor may seem to me.

I agree, but Darkflan, you have a point. That definitely has some racist undertones, but a letter to the editor is the only option you have if you want to speak up. Continue to speak up and inform others and who knows, once enough people see your point, something could happen.

I personally don't see anything wrong with it the way it was intended. You have to hold some serious grudges if you see that as anything other than what it means. If you can't have a comic with a chimp in it without people getting upset then something is wrong. People love playing the race card every chance they get these days.

Phish page? WTF? That's what I got when I clicked on the link you gave me. Either my shits fucked up, or that's just some lame shit.

The picture is ridiculous. I think it's an absolute shame that some people will find that okay. Nothing I can do it, but oh well... I just hope sometime in my lifetime stuff like that will cease.

I thought I heard that the choice of using the chimp being shot was a reference to the recent chimp attack that ended with the police having to shoot the chimp that ripped off the woman's face?

Yes, they should have been aware of the possibility of it being taken as having racist undertones but if it is true that it was drawing on the recent chimp attack events to poke fun at the stimulus bill then some allowance should be made for intent.

Still.....you would think that they would think these things through....sigh.

The media has their sensitivity meters turned up too high. Have you ever heard the comment "Its so easy a trained monkey could do it" or "It looks like a trained monkey was hired to fix this"? That, along with the police shooting of the pet chimp IS what inspired the cartoon. Here is what bothers me. If, every time a political cartoonist makes fun of Barak Obama, the race card is used then its time for those who use the race card to STFU.
For some people EVERYTHING is about race.

I damn near spewed coffee everywhere when I saw this story this morning!

Agreed to the extent that 'a monkey could've written this' etcetera applies, but c'mon: WTF were they thinking?

How could they not have foreseen this furore? Someone just flunked the racial sensitivities test with the fattest 'F' anybody's scored since the civil rights movement. It would've been easily enough forgiven (as Jesse Jackson said) if they'd come out red-faced with their hands in the air and just apologised, but they compounded it by defending it and then issuing a circumstantial apology. Shouldn't expect anything better from a Murdoch franchise, I suppose.

I don't think that's of much concern: just stay away from using blatantly racially charged comparisons.
