It makes me wonder how useful or useless it is to argue about this kind of crap, when the world is obviously inevitably headed in the direction it is. Never mind that other countries wouldn't want to blow us up if we were the kindest, rich nation on earth. I mean seriously, do you really think the taliban would want to wage jihad on a generous country?
One of the big problems is that Americans are so self-absorbed, excessively wealthy, lazy, and unconcerned.

I disagree with war as much as everyone, but I accept its inevitable place in our society at this point in civilization. I like to think one day people will learn and everyone will realize what a good fulfilling life is all about, but I think that society is driving us away from that in favor of consumerism and richness. Once all the rich people's families grow up a little bit and those huge stockpiles of money are dissolved into the economy and charity, things will start to get better.

I agree with you. I like to believe the future will be peaceful but I can't help being pessimistic. There have been hundreds of civilizations over thousands of years and none of them have been warless. How many more thousands of years will it take?

And also provide more world aide to the poor than any other nation.....theres always that aspect to keep in mind. Despite our military spending, we still lead the way in aid. Before you get too down on America, thats something to keep in mind. I'm not saying we're a perfect nation, but I don't believe our being relatively well-off as a nation is something to be ashamed of, either. I feel for those in need, and do what I can to help. That doesn't mean I'm going to abandon the way of living I'm accustomed to in order to emulate them however. I plan on taking advantage of what we have as Americans, as people fought and died to provide us with this country and all it has to offer. I'm not ashamed of who I am or how I live, nor do I believe I should be. I feel for those less fortunate, but I'm not giving up my lifestyle to join them because I feel we are too gluttonous as a nation. I don't buy the guilt trip that because others can't live the lifestyle I live, that I am obligated to cast it aside as well. Why should I? I've worked for what I have in life. Why should I be ashamed of being one of those "worthless Americans" who "has it made" because I don't have to wonder where I'm going to sleep at night or what I'm going to eat for my next meal? I can understand the premise that some may believe we spend too much on our military, but I can't help but be offended that some assume it gives others the right to hate us simply because we're at more of an advantage in life then they are. A hatred for what I've earned in life doesn't justify flying a jet into a tower full of innocent people, and I'll never agree with those who claim it somehow does.

the military spending of the USA is way out of proportion compared to threats it faces. as it is now it's only for the US to continue it's jingoistic practices and lining the pockets of executives in the military industry and buying congress.
and someone said that the US is the biggest contributor to foreign aid, this is true due to the massive economy of the country, but when proportioning it to the GNI it's one of the smallest compared to other countries, such as the UK and Sweden.
