Its ok to treat people like they are guilty because its going to save lives. Just like my state spending all this money on commercials that say "click it or ticket" If you don't buckle up your going to get a ticket. It was no joke, my friends girlfriend got 2 of the tickets, one time for just wearing the seatbelt funny, and my sister got one too. The idea of saving lives justifies the means, its ok to use scare tactics to get people to buckle up because its "saving lives." Too bad they wouldn't direct the money somewhere like drivers education to learn to avoid crashes rather then just hope you survive one. The seatbelts wouldn't be so important if people around here were competent drivers. Peace, HN-

I'm quite familiar with it. Unfortunately, you don't understand it.

Innocence is still presumed........that's a COURT problem. But that doesn't prevent the investigation of people, which is essentially what the security is doing. You investigate to find the bad guy, then charge them, then the COURTS take care of the guilt/innocence thing.

Investigating someone is not declaring them guilty.

Default Thank God this was pre 9/11

My parents emigrated from South Africa when, not only was Nelson Mandela still in jail, but it was illegal to mention his name in public. "Homeland Security" can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

Went to College, got a job, waxed nostalgic for Durban and its poison, met a girl - and was surprised when she agreed to marry me. We flew down to Belize for the wedding and honeymoon; and more importantly, some of the best diving and fishing in the world! (No, I didn't have TB)

On the puddle-jumper back to the mainland, my new wife casually asked me, "So, you brought your Green Card, right?" (Yes Bill O'Reilly, I am a LEGAL alien) It hadn't even crossed my mind to bring my Green Card with me! I tried to bluster my way onto the plane, and although the folks at American Airlines were nice enough, there was no way that they were going to let me on board. They knew that if they let me fly and I was not allowed into the USA in Miami, they would have to fly me back to Johannesburg - which I hadn't seen in 10 years!! I was a little nervous to say the least, since the SA Army was still sending me conscription notices about my deployment to South West Africa. (Now Namibia)

I went to the US embassy in Belize City to plead my case. After a friend broke into my house and faxed down a copy of my Green Card, an hour long interrogation and a 48 hour background check confirmed my identity, I was on my way back armed with a letter from the embassy - and three days late for my job

The rude and disinterested Senorita at the immigration desk (who was probably an immigrant like myself) made me wait in an un-air conditioned interrogation / strip search room until my connecting flight was rolling down the runway for take-off, before grudgingly giving my documents her attention. My Bride, of course, zipped through customs and was sipping wine in the pub when we were re-united, and had already organized another connecting flight.

I still dream about it. What if:
a. It was after 9/11?
b. I did not speak English?
c. I did not have blond hair and blue eyes?
d. I was wearing a red and white checkered head dress?

I went (to my new) home, thanked my lucky stars, popped a cold one, fired up a hot one and realized that I was one of the few lucky ones.

Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile

The US has become very militant indeed. I recently flew to Doha, Qatar during spring break.

Everything was smooth and easy until I entered DFW international airport on the way back. I was greeted by guards with M-16s slung over their shoulders shouting orders at passengers and herding them into lines like cattle. "YOU OVER HERE! DROP YOUR BAGS AND MOVE DROP YOUR BAGS AND MOVE!"

ok so that's why I paid $2000 for a ticket? to ride 18 hours in a tube and be greeted by a drill sergeant?
lame

ya, I'm so tired of American politics and foolishness I am planning on immigrating to another country after finishing my PHD. I'm currently in Qatar till my master's.

Although it was funny to see businessmen scrambling to pull their belts off.
