Default Things flare up in the Ivory Coast.

Things are quickly turning worse in the Ivory Coast. If you haven't noticed check these links out.

French Troops Battle Ivory Coast Forces

Ivory Coast seethes after attack

French soldiers killed in Ivorian attack

Ivory Coast mobs clash with French

FRENCH TROOPS DIE IN RAID

Of course, crap like this happens everyday in this world, we only hear about it when a western country is involved.

Pretty much.

I wonder when the protests against the French "imperial misadventure" in the Ivory Coast will begin?

When the Red Sox win the world series....wait a minute

I bet no one will protest. The 'international' community reserves criticism only for the U.S.

but I will the French luck, I hope they don't get burned like we did in Somolia.

Fo' shizzle, ma nizzle. Really, how can we be the only ones who notice this amazing coincidence?

Same here. As much as I love to whip it on the French, I don't want to see anyone's soldiers die in vain.

Not only is it a French problem, but it is another challege for the U.N. I hope the U.N. gets it's act together and helps does something productive this time. Even if the French are acting under the authority of the U.N. (like the U.S. was in Somolia) This will be seen as an French aggression.....and that is unfair.

I think it's really wishful thinking. The UN's glory days are past, and there are simply too many countries with diverging interests. Some of the countries in the UN would like to see other member countries suffer, and the UN has unfortunately provided the perfect vehicle for that to happen.

I know almost nothing about the conflict going on in the Ivory Coast, but one paragraph from the first link really caught my eye:

Quote:
Saturday's violence began when government warplanes struck French positions at Brobo, near the northern rebel-held town of Bouake, in the afternoon, U.N. military spokesman Philippe Moreux said.
So . . . if the government is launching attacks on the UN "Peacekeepers" is it time to get out of the country, or is the UN in the business of occupying countries regardless of their government wishes?

Sounds like a really strange situation going on there. I'll have to read a little more about it.

I'm not upto date on it either, but I think the Ivory Coast government agreed to a U.N resolution prohibiting attacks on a sepertist region. Earlier in the week the government bombed the capital of the region. The French then destroyed a few of the Ivory Coast's aircraft and it started snow balling.......but this raises a similar questions as Iraq did, how does the world force a country from doing something it shouldn't? How does the world enforce an international aggreement without resorting to military force?
