Not good.

I'm hoping for a Georgia (the country) type 'velvet revolution' - but don't really expect it. It seems more divided between Russia and the EU.

And what's with the orange the opposition uses....

They've started talk of eastern Ukraine vs. western. Not good.

Hey, I just love that the international community is condemning the Russians!

Quote:
WHAT HAS MADE THE SITUATION an international crisis is the heavy-handed Russian interference in the election. Russia's involvement is so beyond the pale that two former presidents who led revolutions against Soviet-installed puppet governments in their own nations--Vaclav Havel of the Czech Republic and Lech Walesa from Poland--have waded in on the side of Yushchenko.

Havel sent a letter which was read by Yushchenko at an evening demonstration in which he urged Yushchenko and his followers to continue their fight. Walesa arrived in Kiev two days later to support Yushchenko. He spoke twice to the crowds at Independence Square. The situation reminded him "of the struggle that we carried on with Solidarity in the 1980s," he said.
I don't know about the rest of you, but Putin's really making me nervous.

Yep, very good to see "new Europe", notably Poland and the Czechs taking the slower, more bureacratic, perhaps egocentric countries in the EU on a lead.

And color me a Transatlanticist (it's been such a while, do I spell that right? ) - but it seems the USA and the EU are on the same line here. They showed some footage of election fraud that didn't look good; burned ballots, people who showed up to hear they already voted and photocopied ballots. No way the Supreme Court can remain credible and justify that (It is not the USA)

This "Revolution" can still go either way, but it may be over before we know it:

Protesters Push Through Fence at Ukraine Parliament
KIEV, Ukraine (Reuters) - Supporters of opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko broke through a fence surrounding Ukraine's parliament Tuesday, massing around its main door after the chamber failed to debate a no confidence vote in the government.

Reuters correspondent Yuri Kulikov said they broke through the fence chanting: "Yushchenko, Yushchenko!" Parliamentary speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn said: "I appeal to protesters. Don't storm parliament. It is the last pillar of democracy. Tomorrow we will make a decision that will satisfy all of Ukraine."

Yep, he kinda freaks me out. Sort of Stalin-ish in his persona, I think.

FOX was just showing thousands of people camped out in front of what I guess is the presidents office. Why don't we have the moxie to do stuff like that here? It's freakin' cold there and those people are out in droves, making a statement about what they believe in. We just sit here in our cushy chairs, I with my blankie, and watch it unfold. Power to the people.

peace

I don't know if he's as bad as Joe "I Murdered 20 Million" Stalin, but he sure as hell doesn't seem a big fan of democracy.

1. What are you doing watching FOX? Isn't that the evil channel?

2. We don't do things like that here because (brace for impact) our democracy isn't in any actual danger.

Ukraine, simply put, should never have been a country. It has always been seperated communities and ethnicities, like the middle east.

The thing that you've got to remember is that the EU is pure bull****. Its a nice idea and something to hold hope for in the future, but realistically Russias got alot more going for the Ukraine than the bunch of idealist ****ers that comprise the EU.

The supporters of the Moscow-based government (**** the names) have got coal-mining contracts with the Russians that have kept both sides of the country in a tidy state of progress for decades. Understand the bitterness on their part. They've (the pro-moscow) been working their country into evolution and look what their brothers have given them: a ****ty vote. Whether Putins playing games with them is another matter, but its slightly farsical that they should have anything to do (politically and economically) with anyone else but the Russians. Its currently their most lucrative market.

The EU, as we know, has a probably more lucrative market, but the Ukraine side supporting Moscow knows that it will be royally screwed over by them, and opts for the most sensible ally. I just don't see the logic of them linking to the EU. They might as well keep on the straight and narrow and take a nice, predictable opening when it arises rather than jumping in with all guns blazing.

My theory is that the Ukraine pro-moscow group and moscow itself realised how massively their populace was about to **** up and that they intervened. Democracy has its perils. Enough of the paranoia though, it'll sort itself out.
