I smoked for four years, two of those years trying to quit. I finally quit four months ago, and am completly happy to do so.

But I do not think cigarette advertising should be prohibited. Seems to much like "see no evil.. etc" to me. A person educated about the truth of tobacco should be able to resist it, if they value their life.

I'd say your lovers' quarrel is off-topic. We're discussing tobacco advertising in this thread.

I've been a cigar smoker for many years. I smoke, on the average, one or two a week. The chances of getting cancer/emphysema from cigars or pipes is very small. Chewing tobacco and snuff are worse. Cigarettes, because the smoke is inhaled, are the greatest risk of all.

"Tobacco" advertising is mostly for cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and snuff. I rarely see an ad for pipe tobacco or cigars, except in specialty magazines. The advertising is always youth-oriented, showing beautiful people doing fun things in gorgeous scenery, the implication being that smoking cancer sticks makes you one of the beautiful fun people. Once they seduce kids into the nicotine habit they've got a customer for life.

I'd be happier if they showed my father in the last few years of his life, gasping oxygen through a tube, sleeping upright in a chair, and spending most of his time in procedures necessary to breathing for a few more hours.

Because beautiful people only appeal to the young? It'd be one thing if they showed SpongeBob smoking a Marlboro, but it's usually some greasy construction worker smoking - how is a greasy construction worker appealing to young people? "Hey, kids, take up smoking and be just like me! All dirty and greasy!"

I smoke, and I didn't start because of the advertising. But I can also quit whenever I get the willpower to - this customer-for-life stuff is, IMHO, kinda sticky also. Sure, quitting's hard as hell (I go bat**** insane whenever I do) yet I've no one to blame but me. It's a personal responsibility issue, not one of the evil tobacco companies preying on The Children™.

--- I was just pointing out the faulty logic. Most Marijuana treatment programs are court diversionary programs that have little or nothing to do with addicition and a great deal to do with protecting the person from a criminal record that will haunt them for the rest of their lives.

Of course that part of the conversation makes me wonder if a touch of Spring in the Air hasn't gotten into some folks' blood? --
