Default E-Tracking: Government Monitoring Your Speed Via Satellite?!

Ya know, I always make the comparison about the government and the legality of drugs with monitoring your speed limit in the car. I would always say, if the government cared that much they would just put tracking devices in everyone's car that would let them know when someone went over the speed limit. It's so Orweillian in nature that I never dreamed it to be possible.

I recently read a news article about how Canada is thinking about putting devices on cars that notify the driver when they go 10 mph over the speed limit and the accelerator gets harder to press because of this. When I first read it, I thought, hmm, how much do you want to bet the US will take this idea and run with it. Then I see this article.

You can read the Canadian writeup about tracking vehicles via GPS here, which is different in theory because it has to do with anti-speeding.

Here's a snippet from the US project:
Quote:
The U.S. Department of Transportation has been handing millions of dollars to state governments for GPS-tracking pilot projects designed to track vehicles wherever they go. So far, Washington state and Oregon have received fat federal checks to figure out how to levy these "mileage-based road user fees."

I thinking speeding is far more of a threat to public safety than marijuana. I would support more strict enforcement of traffic laws. Maybe not satellites or devices that screw with my car....people can made choices that put them at risk, and that is ok. But when people choose to speed they are putting others at risk, and that is not ok.

What if you're taking someone to the hospital? What if your wife has just gone into labor?

The issue isn't as black-and-white as you suggest. That's why we have people serving as police officers so they can make judgment calls, most cops I know will not only refrain from giving you a speeding ticket under such circumstances, but many will give you an escort to the hospital as well.

yea, some law or policy or whatever was pass in 98 or 96 requiring computer chips in cars, so eventually the government or corporation will be able to track you, your speed and charge you for using their highways. Mybe not yet but "BABY STEPS".

There has never been a study that has demonstrated that speeding kills. What kills is people who don't know how to drive or know anything about their car or basic skills. You want to save lives on the road? Up the standards drastically for obtaining a license.
