Alright, well I will start out with this bit:

Was he just talking about legalizing marijuana?

This is the part that really had me hooting and hollering...

Since 2001, we have spent nearly $10 billion to develop cleaner, cheaper, more reliable alternative energy sources -- and we are on the threshold of incredible advances. So tonight, I announce the Advanced Energy Initiative -- a 22 percent increase in clean-energy research at the Department of Energy, to push for breakthroughs in two vital areas. To change how we power our homes and offices, we will invest more in zero-emission coal-fired plants; revolutionary solar and wind technologies; and clean, safe nuclear energy.

We must also change how we power our automobiles. We will increase our research in better batteries for hybrid and electric cars, and in pollution-free cars that run on hydrogen. We will also fund additional research in cutting-edge methods of producing ethanol, not just from corn but from wood chips, stalks, or switch grass. Our goal is to make this new kind of ethanol practical and competitive within six years. Breakthroughs on this and other new technologies will help us reach another great goal: to replace more than 75 percent of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025. By applying the talent and technology of America, this country can dramatically improve our environment ... move beyond a petroleum-based economy ... and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past.PS: Wouldn't that be fantastic?

And to keep America competitive, one commitment is necessary above all: We must continue to lead the world in human talent and creativity. Our greatest advantage in the world has always been our educated, hard-working, ambitious people -- and we are going to keep that edge. Tonight I announce the American Competitiveness Initiative, to encourage innovation throughout our economy, and to give our nation's children a firm grounding in math and science.

First: I propose to double the federal commitment to the most critical basic research programs in the physical sciences over the next 10 years. This funding will support the work of America's most creative minds as they explore promising areas such as nanotechnology, supercomputing, and alternative energy sources.

Second: I propose to make permanent the research and development tax credit, to encourage bolder private-sector investment in technology. With more research in both the public and private sectors, we will improve our quality of life -- and ensure that America will lead the world in opportunity and innovation for decades to come.

Third: We need to encourage children to take more math and science, and make sure those courses are rigorous enough to compete with other nations. We have made a good start in the early grades with the No Child Left Behind Act, which is raising standards and lifting test scores across our country. Tonight I propose to train 70,000 high school teachers, to lead advanced-placement courses in math and science ... bring 30,000 math and science professionals to teach in classrooms ... and give early help to students who struggle with math, so they have a better chance at good, high-wage jobs. If we ensure that America's children succeed in life, they will ensure that America succeeds in the world.
My anger at the guy surprisingly diminished as he uttered the above words... if he can pull this stuff off...

Is this the same George W. Bush who happily chopped $18 billion in education funding out of this year's budget?

I don't know why anyone would believe a single word this man utters. How can you tell when he's lying? His lips are moving.

Tonight I will set out a better path -- an agenda for a nation that competes with confidence -- an agenda that will raise standards of living and generate new jobs. Americans should not fear our economic future, because we intend to shape it.

Keeping America competitive begins with keeping our economy growing. And our economy grows when Americans have more of their own money to spend, save, and invest.
Three cheers for free trade. Reduce those taxes Bush. Just remember to balance the budget, ok?!

Keeping America competitive requires us to be good stewards of tax dollars. Every year of my presidency, we have reduced the growth of nonsecurity discretionary spending -- and last year you passed bills that cut this spending.
I love how he puts "nonsecurity" before discretionary spending. Don't you dare tell us how much you have INCREASED discretionary spending overall...

Sigh. Our President is even more antiquated than our education system.

GOOD, HIGH-WAGE JOBS AREN'T GOING TO CUT IT ANY MORE!

THIS IS THE INFORMATION AGE, NOT THE INDUSTRIAL AGE!

There is no such thing as job security. Job security is an ideal of the industrial age, an ideal of the "defined benefit" pension plan age. Guess what, in 1974 the government (at the request of businesses who were going bankrupt because of the cost of DB pensions) said to every employee, "Your employer isn't going to take care of you anymore. You must invest in the stock market for your retirement." (by switching from defined benefit plans to defined contribution plans)

SURELY our leaders know this. SURELY our leaders know that financial education is the only thing that can save America's economy in the long term. Why the big conspiracy? Why is everyone holding the wool over their eyes and saying "Nyah nyah you can't see me"?

Ghei0qghipeqhgpqhpgqhpqehgpeqhp *slams keyboard* This is so frustrating.

Well at least he is recognizing that scientific understanding is very important if we want to continue to be "top dog" of the world....

Now if he can just understand that fact as he ponders the whole "intelligent" design thing.

I agree that flexibility is very important, and no job should be 100% secure, but at least he is recognizing the importance of science and technology. I was, frankly, surprised by his words on the subject. I had been under the impression that he waging a war on science, being the fundamentalist christian he is.

He's saying what needs to be said to boost his approval rating. Actions speak louder than words, I won't believe it till I see him follow through.

NO. Uh uhh. Not true. Show me the $18 million in education dollars "cut from this years budget" Oh and "happily" nice touch.

Arent you actually referring to the cuts in the projected growth in in the education budget over the next 6 years? Sure the media can get away with calling steady increases in dollars as cuts, but I think we should have a higher standard here.

Hey why you are at it, how about explaining why school perfomance has been flat or dropped over the past 30 plus years while the money thrown at the schools has gone through the roof? How does spending more money help? WE spend more than just about any nation on earth and are steadily doing worse-- Money isn't the answer-- choice is-- Um no not the choice end the life of a fetus-- the choice to send one's child to whatever school one thinks is best for that child.

What Churchill said and it still holds true is: "If you are not a liberal at 20, you have no heart. If you are not a conservative at 40, you have no brain."

I knew it was something like that! At least I attributed it correctly! I agree, it still holds true. The problem is, for America today, democrat != liberal and republican != conservative.

I agree there. If anybody tries to be knowledgeable about anything, while at the same time interacting with "civil society," they are dismissed as a know-it-all, or even worse, a liberal.
