Default Sing along with your I-Pod.. Get held as a Terrorist

Man held as terrorism suspect over punk song
Wed Apr 5, 2006 09:15 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - British anti-terrorism detectives escorted a man from a plane after a taxi driver had earlier become suspicious when he started singing along to a track by punk band The Clash, police said Wednesday.

Detectives halted the London-bound flight at Durham Tees Valley Airport in northern England and Harraj Mann, 24, was taken off.

The taxi driver had become worried on the way to the airport because Mann had been singing along to The Clash's 1979 anthem "London Calling," which features the lyrics "Now war is declared -- and battle come down" while other lines warn of a "meltdown expected."

Mann told British newspapers the taxi had been fitted with a music system which allowed him to plug in his MP3 player and he had been playing The Clash, Procol Harum, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles to the driver.

"He didn't like Led Zeppelin or The Clash but I don't think there was any need to tell the police," Mann told the Daily Mirror.

A Durham police spokeswoman said Mann had been released after questioning -- but had missed his flight.

"The report was made with the best of intentions and we wouldn't want to discourage people from contacting us with genuine concerns," she said.

Good Grief.. is this what we're coming to? Singing along with an I-Pod makes someone a potential terrorist?

The UK is headed down a path of madness. See these two articles:

Police force has 'no time for small crime'
A police force has stopped investigating less serious crimes unless they are racist or homophobic.

...

Exceptions would also be allowed if a victim had been repeatedly targeted or was elderly or disabled.

...

Lesser crimes would be recorded but not pursued, even where there was overwhelming evidence, such as CCTV footage.

'Let burglars off with caution', police told
Burglars will be allowed to escape without punishment under new instructions sent to all police forces. Police have been told they can let them off the threat of a court appearance and instead allow them to go with a caution.

The same leniency will be shown to criminals responsible for more than 60 other different offences, ranging from arson through vandalism to sex with underage girls.

...

Some serious offences - including burglary of a shop or office, threatening to kill, actual bodily harm, and possession of Class A drugs such as heroin or cocaine - may now be dealt with by caution if police decide that would be the best approach.

Definitely Murdock, I don't want the US to turn in the UK either. And me three about the MP3 terrorist story. That's absurd. But that's what hysteria over terrorism gets ya.

More news about the UK:

Muggings go unreported in despair at police
Six out of ten muggings are never reported because the public have lost faith in the police to do anything, it emerged last night.

The devastating verdict is delivered in a report by Demos, one of Tony Blair's favourite think-tanks. It reveals plummeting public confidence in the police means tens of thousands of offences go unreported.

Of Arms & the Law - More on Britain
I've posted below on how the British government (1) makes it all but impossible for its subjects to defend themselves and (2) declines to defend them, having recently adopted a policy of issuing warnings for burglary, assault, etc..

Don Kates alerted me to this reprint of a Times article, discussing how their police react to criminal gun assaults. Apparently the standard procedure is to stay away from the scene for hours, because after all an armed criminal might be dangerous. The first case cited involved police staying away from a shooting scene for an hour despite telephone calls from it saying the gunman had left. In the meantime, two women bled to death. The culture has become one of extreme caution, driven by events such as a workplace health and safety citation of a Police Commissioner ... after a constable suffered a fatal fall while pursuing a criminal across a rooftop.

About Terrorism: Local Law enforcement is currently required by Homeland Security to undergo a terrorist training on Indian Reservations. It is feared that Native Americans will become a source of terrorism. If local agencies do not participate in the training, they will not qualify for a proportionate amount of Homeland Security money being given as grants.

I think that is terribly ironic. 150 years ago, the Caucasian was the Native American's terrorist. Now, the American Government is afraid of what the Native American's can (will) do to national security.
