| So, whats the deal with this guy? Should we just ignore him and stay with the troubles we've got, or should we make a concerted effort to stop him? Should we back off and let China handle the problem as we could hope, or should we just use a U.N. resolution to use force? Personally, I'm sick of the whole mess, and I say put out his light bulb for him, but then what? Another Iraq? I think we need a new exit strategy. When we decide to stick our dicks in something and fuck it up again, we should be men and pull the hell out when we're done, not keep squishing around in the juice. So here's my solution for North Korea....get rid of him, (the leader) and then leave. Yes, just leave. No more squishing around, load up and get out. Let the North Koreans figure out the rest of it. They can't do any worse on their own. Hell, I bet they all eat everyday, which is better than their doin' now........We could be giving those poor people the best Sunday morning they've ever had....... Then we could pull those troops out of South Korea and ship their asses to Iraq....... Some Where In Ded Land....... ![]()

| We're hearing all our information on Korea from the same sources we heard that Saddam and al-Qaeda had ties. Why is it any of our business? Why can't a country build it's own defenses? Because they might use them on us is not good enough for me. War has become business as usual in this world and it's sad that people won't(or don't want to) educate themselves to understand that war's solve nothing. Just curious dedbr(and I'm not trying to poke or prod[yes, I realize our opinions differ greatly, especially at this moment in time] I just wonder what you think about this), (and I'm not even sure it's legal to say what I'm about to say, but I believe it's relevant, so if a mod needs to remove my comments, by all means, I'm not trying to bring any liability upon Marijuana.com) but what if a citizen of Iraq or North Korea were to say make the same comments you just made about Kim Jong Il...but about the President of the United States? Would they be just as warranted as you think you are to say those things? Killing the leader of a country and just leaving...uhhh, yeah. |

| How many innocent people will lose their lives to THIS saga? How many must die, I want to know. And why is it, that without death, there is no action?? The UN won't do anything to N.Korea until they blow something up. Until they kill some innocent civilians. Heck, it seems like we are just letting them have exactly what they want: a whole cache of nuclear weapons, so many that they won't be able to be stopped when the UN finally decides to do something about it!! They are biding their time until they are ready to say, "come and get some bacon, UNITED NATIONS!" AND THEN **BLOW**, the only thing left on the face of the earth is north korea. George W. Bush is a liar. I watched his speech on TV, when he said "There will be serious repercussions against North Korea if they continue to test nuclear weapons..." HELLO! And then N. Korea DID test launch nuclear missiles into outerspace. And what did Bush do?? He urged CHINA to put SANCTIONS on North Korea!! Seriously, this is what happened. And seriously, we will probably lose a lot of innocent lives from both sides of the hemisphere if nothing is done immediately. |

| I watched the news break today on CNN. North Korea now claims to have tested a nuke. CNN also reported that US intelligence cannot confirm that North Korea had pulled off any test.

| I'm not any sort of acclaimed military stategist, but i'm all for Ded's plan. I don't think we'd need an invasion.....just an assassination team. Kim shouldn't be in power, and theres no reason to believe he won't use nuclear weapons when he has them at his dispoal. he's already been tesating missles capable of nuclear payloads, and now has tested an actual nuke....all within the past few months! Don't you see how this kind of rapid escalation is a bit alarming? |

| Why do you think the MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) strategy that got us through the Cold War won't work with North Korea? The US could turn all of that country into a glass parking lot in half an hour. They might have a few low-yield fission bombs and untried delivery systems. The real danger, as I see it, is not a stand-up nuclear missile attack from North Korea. It's the Koreans selling off a suitcase nuke to terrorists. Most Americans can't conceive of the place of Kim Jung Il in North Korean society. He's not just the Head of State. He's a god. If we were to assassinate him that's when North Korea would launch against the US. I'm thinking that there has to be a more nuanced way to deal with North Korea than cowboying in and putting a bullet through Kim's forehead. Kim hopes to use his nuclear threat as a way to get other countries to provide economic and material support. North Korea is falling apart. They have almost no industrial base because all the capital gets spent on the military. They can't feed themselves. The smartest course might be to sit back and wait until the country collapses, which it will do if the wealthy nations of the Earth don't keep providing handouts to appease the dictator. From the CIA World Factbook: "Massive international food aid deliveries have allowed the people of North Korea to escape mass starvation since famine threatened in 1995, but the population continues to suffer from prolonged malnutrition and poor living conditions. Large-scale military spending eats up resources needed for investment and civilian consumption." "China seeks to stem illegal migration of tens of thousands of North Koreans escaping famine, economic privation, and political oppression."

Does it tear itself to pieces or does it evolve into something new? I'd sure as fuck want to be sure before risking an assault, myself. ![]() North Korea spends a tenth of its GDP on its military (placing it amongst the highest military expenditures per state in the world), there are something like 50 enlisted soldiers per 1000 of its population, and best of all its stagnant economy is propped up heavily by arms sales and suspected drug trafficking. I believe the Hezbollah has a stock of North Korean missiles. It's too volatile a situation to risk blowing the lid off, IMHO. But on the other hand, if I may refer to 2point4: Quote:
On the political side of the coin: Kim Jong-Il is possibly the most reckless foreign leader to begrace the 21st century. Regardless of how trigger happy he may or may not be, we do not want him to have any more toys to show off to the other kids on the block. Luckily we are in the position of swapsies with China and the USA contributing large quantities of aid, and it is my oppinion that this strategy should be pursued. If the pressure is placed in the form of sanctions and the withdrawal of the aforementioned aid we may be able to appeal to whatever nexus of power may exist at the feet of Kim Jong-Il's fucked up little political world to put the leashes on him, but that appears to be proving less and less effective these days. Overall all though: I would like nothing more than to see the perverted premiership of North Korean politics ended. | ||
