Default Let's take a crack at this...

First off, Russia is the most unstable country in the world this side of Afghanistan. The people live in crap(except for the wealthy) and the government really has little power. The Communist Party is still huge in that country, they control quite a few Politburo seats. Many people are pushing for a return to Communism because under Communism everyone got their state supplied house/ration/employment. They aren't used to the situation we have here. We will fall flat if you aren't strong enough to grab what you need for yourself. They are used to being given the bare minimum and being taken care of if they need it. Trust me, I know a thing or two about Russia, I speak fluent Russian and I hosted a kid from Russia at my house last year. My former Russian teacher spent six months of every year from 1990~1997 in Russia, his wife is from Russia. Don't try and tell me that I don't know...

Secondly, I see China as a threat because THEY ARE! Any nation that has over 1 Billion potential soldiers is a threat. In a war of attrition with China we will not win, so that is why they are a threat. They also are trying to get their hands on nuclear weapons. We can't allow every country to have that power, most cannot handle it.

Lastly, before anyone calls me a conservative or anything like that do realize that I am just a realist. I am as much a liberal is I can be when is comes to anything but world diplomacy. You can't be putting flowers in the rifles of these "rogue nations" while they march to war. It ain't gonna work folks. We must protect ourselves. Oh, and whoever said that Bush is just bombing whoever pisses him off and calling it a 'war on terror' needs to pull their head from out of their anus and watch again what happened six months ago. Was that all imaginary? Did that not happen? I think that TERRORISTS brought TWO F*CKING BUILDINGS to the ground in New York! I think thousands lost their lives. I think that there had to be someone responsible for that. Who the hell do you think we are going after in Afghanistan? Jesus, you need to wake up and realise that Bill Clinton was a dipsh*t when it came to national defense. He left us wide open for the attacks that we suffered. Bush has prepared us more in six months for another attack than Clinton did in eight years! I'm sorry, but there is a real threat coming out of countries like Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, Syria, and the PLO. Wake up and realize that you can't just plug your ears when the other side of the debate has the right answer. You can't be right forever.

Brad: Very well put.

I guess I'm not the only brainwashed one around here

DeepFreeze:

You didn't pay attention to what I said. I said that talk like that can bring unwanted attention to this site. Do you want the Secret Service coming to Rick's house and serving a warrant for his server records. Do you want them to start monitoring and tracing IP numbers etc. Talk about assassinating Presidents and it'll happen. It takes one person letting their mouth get out of control and everyone will be under a microscope.

Bongzilla:

I'm still a little miffed that you'd say I always agree with the govt. Hell, I've posted on this forum about policies and laws I didn't agree with. Either you're not reading or you are letting your prejudice get to you.

"Come on man, everyone should no what their government is doing. Doing things 'secretly for our own security' is bull****,"

That's ridiculous. Many things should be kept from public knowledge. That's part of our problem lately, we tell everything to everyone.

"China isn't the enemy man"

Oh yes they are. They are still building and expanding their military. Hell, as recent as 2-3 years ago, it was shown that they still have ICBM's targeted at US cities.

Further, they are positioning themselves in other areas, like control of the Panama Canal for example.

They are dangerous.

"we should be hearing about these things from the government"

Why should we hear about it? Why should we tell the world what we know about? Or don't know?

Let me give you a simple example: If I get information that there will be a burglary at midnight on a certain jewelry store, should I go on the news and blab it to everyone, or get ready quietly and nab them in the act? If I blab, will they go through with it, except come prepared for a major gun battle and get lots of people hurt?

Sometimes, intellignece and contingency planning is best done quietly and, yes, in secret.

All I have to say is that this world is a very dangerous place. There are people out there who will kill you, whoever you are without hesitation and without remorse. They would if they could kill you, your parents, your children for no more reason than for being an American. We can not assume too much when our lives are a stake. The countries being discussed all pose a threat to our lives. Iraq and Iran have proven not to be rational and if those countries could, they could attack the U.S. with nuclear weapons. The only way to counter such a threat to to pose a overwhelming counter threat. The U.S. must make it clear that any attack on this country will not be tolerated.

OK, so because one group of people (a good percentage of which weren't even from afghanistan) killed thousands of people on 9/11, that gives your government the right to kill MILLIONS of innocent afghanis by basically bombing the country until there's nothing left to bomb....all because they want to find ONE PERSON? i'm sorry, but how that could ever be even remotely justified is beyond me...and it seems like Bush is using that 'war on terrorism' excuse a bit gratuitously, no?

what happened in september was appalling, and whoever was responsible should burn in hell....but since when do two wrongs make a right? and now bush is preparing NUKES to drop on countries that weren't even involved in the september 11th attacks??
i repeat, your government disgusts me.

The fourth one?

Are you planning to skip the third one?

Damn it people, making plans is not the same as doing it. They plan out a ton of scenarios, even the least likely ones. That's part of being prepared. Just because he told them to work on the contingency plans does not mean he gave the order to execute the plans. Hell, we had plans to nuke the Soviets for how many decades...... and never did it.

Prior planning prevents poor performance.

BTW-

"Bush wants to drop nukes".

If he had wanted to, it would have been done by now. You know, he is the President.

I believe all it takes is his order, and somebody to confirm the order.

Let me ask a question... What has stopped him before?

Nothing has changed, or has it?

Default This is very difficult.

I saw this when it was first posted, and expected to see it disproven.
Then I opened my paper this morning and got the European take.
Front page of the paper, and an editorial to boot.

The Europeans are really worried by one sentence. The need to make nuclear weapons a tactical weapon, removing the "Last resort" inhibition that has always held their use off.
These people are very afraid.
Public relations???
I cannot believe they let this one get out.
Christ, I still carry the damned onus of my top secret nuc. clearance. And all I dealt with were little artillery pony nukes.

I do not believe the use can be rationalized.
Man, I know what happened on september 11th.

We lost a lot of people, hell, the whole world lost a lot of people that day. We lost two buildings. I was angered and still am, I wanted revenge but that is fading, I want to assure such never happens again anywhere in the world. But I will not come down on the side of nukes.
I guess I know too much about them and their effects.
You see, I was also trained to be an N.B.C. N.C.O.

I got to take the measurements, and make the cute little fallout graphs for my commander. In charge of keeping people alive as long as possible in a post detonation environment. I remember the relief felt world wide when the cold war died. Is our memory that short? Gods, can you imagine the decontamination sites needed for say...Chicago? Scard people often try to strike a wealk blow beofre a perceived opponent is reaady with a strong one. It is usually a vain attempt to make the stronger stop, or perhaps even to win. It rarely works, but does usually do some damage.
Unlike a small war or even a bar brawl, the damage could be incredible.
The Europeans are becoming very very afraid of America.
Honor has always held us back from the indiscriminate use of our power.
Everyone here knows that America could own Europe in short order if we took it into our head to do so. Everyone is also equally certain we never would.
Now it seems anything that disagrees with the shrub is reaon for an attack. They wonder when something they do not support will bring about economic sanctions or a good old fashioned bombing.

We Americans do not look at the world as often as they look at us. America is always in the news, everything that happens there is examined to see how it will affect the world.
Kyoto, the abm treaty dismissal, "Either with us or against us" rhetoric, the steel issue. These people are actually wondering if the man wants true isolationism for America..
or wants to start a new crusade toward empire.
Plans to never join a world court also anger and make them wonder.
Europeans know, and often affirm, what America has done for them over the last 60 years. None more than the Germans. We just never look over this way long enough to hear it.
But they are worried, and they are becoming frightened.
I know America, but to these people we are hard to figure out, and I can understand their fears. No one likes a bully and that is the way hedge junior is shaping up.

I have my own doubts about the shrub, I mistrust the agenda of his power clique.
I truly worry about the future of a free America.
I hope he gets off the cowboy's horse and decides to start taking the diplomats carriage, or we can all go riding into a sunset of incredible proportions.
One thing is certain.
"People who live in glass houses should not throw stones"

They might come back and start breaking panes.

Y'all be careful.
