| I experience trembling fear of the invisible web that binds me. (I heard the spider is near.) That's how I feel. Now my knavish companions, it’s your turn: * What does your government mean to you? * How is it supporting (or failing) you as an individual? Answers to these questions would be simply delightful.

| Well, in my ideal society government would mean "we". Everyday citezens would pay a large role in the government and when someone says for the people and by the people they would actually mean it. The government is failing to support me as an individual in that I feel it alienates me and takes a "big brother"/"we know whats best for you" approach. | |

| To be honest, I don't have much interaction with our government. I know its there, but I have never really had to deal with any part of it. My biggest problem however is that I feel the votes of the people don't really matter much anymore. It just seems like some issues have gotten pretty far out of hand. I.E.--, the fact that we spend something like 20 million dollars per misile that can cut through mountains. Or 2 billion for a fighter jet that can hold enough nukes to tear apart a whole continent. It just doesnt make sense anymore. Or maybe how we still kill people on the chair. I have wondered why this is, and the best answer i have gotten is that it costs an insanely high amount of money to keep a prisoner for a year in jail. But to this i wonder: why are there so many people for weed/other drug charges, yet noone makes a fuss about that. I dunno if that makes a whole lot of sense, but in response to your question, i dont put a whole lot of trust in our government. I just try to keep out of its way while it goes on a trillion dollar manhunt for the leader of a group of people, to whom we have already handed several billion dollars over the years for protection against the russians, (and consequently the US), and also i just read that we gave the taliban about 300 million so that they would ease up their drug trading to the rest of the world. Oh well. my 2 cents. ~CocoaDrinker~ | |

| We have changed America from the land of the free where government was suposed to be the people, all people, to a place of unjust laws and pointless wars. We don't even go by our supreme law of the land anymore, the constiution, if we did, no non violent drug offenders would be jailed, nor anybody in the pursuit of happieness. My government has failed me by taxing me, a soverign born American, one that should not be taxed. This was supposed to be a country where we only tax commerce, thats changed to a country that taxes everyone and everything. Its sad, sad but true. Peace |

| I have two conflicting views of government, and I can not seem for the life of me to reconcile the two. My first view is that government should exist only to ensure that the rights of men are not infringed upon by others. That's my idealized view of government, but at the same time I realize that if we didn't have government, we'd have no sewers, no roads, and a lot of other things that vastly improve our quality of life. I'll play rock-paper-scissors with myself to decide which view is right. | |

| Without government, we would progress very little as a society, public works would not exist, and absolute power would rule. Anarchy is not the key. The problem with government is that it's run by people, who are susceptible to corruption. Also, the government sometimes forgets that it's here to protect the interests of the people. The people associated with government begin to consider the interests of the government above the interests of the people. And so a behemoth begins to grow, and the behemoth wants to live, not die. The behemoth serves special interests, who in turn feed the behemoth. So, unsurprisingly, all current forms of government are flawed. However, they are definitely superior to the absence of government. |

| There is no democratic government anywhere today. I hate what society and life has become, so i refuse to work and vote under the current system. The only 2 things you need in life are food and shelter... everything else is pointless. I plan on travelling around on my bike and stopping in a place and picking fruit or something for a few months and then moving on. |

| the government hasnt changed. only technology and the public outlook is all. in our grandpparents generation it was not patriotic to question the govt, or to deride the president. with the advent of vietnam and watergate many of the publics perceptions changed. I dont know if any of you recall the outcry in the 70's when it was disclosed the CIA and FBI was spying on american citizens. Thats where the freedom of information act came from. things only change through popular outcry and the suffering of many i guess. best D. |
