| And just a few days after the Amnesty International report on the US and other 'democractic countries' taking advantage of 9/11 in terms of our rights... Living in Canada seems better and better everyday. |

| Jr. Member | I remember on 9/11 everyone in my office was sitting in the conference room in various states of tearing, anger, mania, and stunned silence. Ashcroft came on T.V. and I said to somebody, "Who's that?" "He's our Attorney General." "Damn. He looks like an evil bastard. I wouldn't want to live next door to him. Look at those lines on his face -- he's used to hurting people, badly. There's not an ounce of compassion left in his cold heart." "Shut up [Shaba Zero]." "Ah, okay." What I found out about him in the following weeks made me like him even less. But I don't think there's a good reason to hate him personally. He's just a figurehead. I doubt he's the real souce of this anti-terrorism hysteria. Blame the scared sheep in congress wrapped up tight in party lines, anthrax-phobias, and big business contributions. [shrugs]

| Did anyone notice that prior to this, the US was didn't have domestic spying, but many other countries like the UK, France etc. did and still do?

| Yeah, and that scares me. I couldn't imagine living in the UK where they have security cameras EVERYWHERE. I definately don't want to see our country go down the same road that they have. I can easily see these new rules being used to spy on "domestic terrorist threats" like Martin Luther King Jr. was back in the 60s. I'm sure you are knowledgable about Hoover's tactics in the FBI, and I see this move by Ashcroft as regressive, as are most of his actions. | |

| Regardless to what you were referring, I recognize that the US has had a far better track record regarding privacy issues than much of Europe. Nonetheless, it still troubles me that we are taking steps backwards. | |

| Ironic isn't it? Us becoming like many European countries is being called a step backwards, while at the same time, our drug policy is considered behind theirs. |
