Default Egypt, China, and the Bomb

China Will Help Egypt Develop
Nuclear Weapons - Report
By The Jerusalem Post Internet Staff
6-24-2

The German Daily Die Welt on Saturday published a report, according to which China is set to aid Egypt in obtaining nuclear weapons, Israel Radio reported. The report quoted Western intelligence officials.

According to the report, Egypt intends to mine natural uranium in the Sinai Peninsula and enrich it to weapons' grade material. The material would then be used on long-range missiles.

According to the paper's report, an agreement between Egypt and China was reached during Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's visit to China in January. Most of the details of the agreement have remained confidential, although security sources believe that the agreement between the two countries regards cooperation on matters of research, development and use of uranium sources.

The report said Egypt denied it had any nuclear agenda. According to the report, the International Atomic Energy Agency, situated in Vienna, confirmed that it has no information on nuclear developments in Egypt. However, the paper stressed that there have been increased hints that Cairo was stepping up its attempts to attain and enrich uranium.

This point of view may not be very popular, but whatever. If I were in charge I'd impose a total trade embargo on China if this is true. I'd also impose an embargo on Egypt and if at any point I see what might be nuclear weapons anywhere in Egypt you better believe there'd be thousands of bombs raining down on their research facilities. Nothing good can come of another country having nuclear weapons. Forget about 'dirty bombs' if the Egyptians get nuclear weapons what is to stop them from directly giving a nuke to bin laden? They don't like our policy in the region any more than bin laden does, why would they think twice?

At the very least this'll get a few more missiles pointed at Beijing. Stupid move by the Chinese if you ask me. They need us way more than we need them and yet they continue to push us. F*** 'em. Don't give them a damn thing and we'll see how much money they have for nuclear weapons. They won't have enough money to provide the basics for their people and I don't think that they'll stay in power long if they can't. There's a whole lot of Chinese folk and I'd bet a lot of them are tired of being behind the rest of the world.

"If I were in charge I'd impose a total trade embargo on China if this is true. "
I am amazed that we HAVEN'T imposed a trade embargo on China yet. That country is home to some of the most GROTESQUE human rights violations. We impose embargos on many countries for this reason, but we have too many corporate interests in China and too many of our producs that we love so much are made in their sweatshops.

It's rare that you'll see me agreeing with Brad and Shaman at the same time............

I agree about the embargo, although my reasons are closer to Brads than Shaman's.

I've said for years that the Chinese can't be trusted and that they are still a threat. Non-conservatives usually dismiss this as a displaced Cold Warrior still looking for the Red Menace. I don't trust them any further than I could throw the collective billion plus Chinese.

Um, thanks nite****ft... I think?
I aslo feel that they could be a threat to national security. Which in my opinion is another reason why we haven't gone the embargo route... don't want to piss them off... countries that we do currently have embargos on, cuba for instance, don't pose any "real" threat.

I'm glad to see that so many of us see eye to eye on this issue. I think it's complete BS that we are considering/have granted normal trade relations with China. Like you others have said, we need to do the complete opposite.

And I read today from drudge that the Chinese are buying more subs, planes, and other implements of war from the Russians. That's no good, especially since the Chinese have no problems with arming the so many non friendly states. IMHO, China and Russia tie for the second greatest threat to the US after the terrorists.

I believe that we have not embargoed China is because our government is controlled by corporations that see a huge profit potential in China. And, money that our Corporations invest in China only helps the Chinese arm themselves. It's not going to the average Chinese person. Until they have a true democracy and a free market, we need to stay out of China.

Exactly, but think about all the oil countries that we should be imposing a trade embargo on. If the US/Canada/etc., governments care so much about human rights on a global scale than how come they don't take decisive action against these countries? It's all because of money.

So how can we be placing our holier than thou attitude on China or other countries we trade with? Yes they have done and still do horrible things to the people, but are we really doing anything to discourage them?!

You raise a very good point. We have propped up apparently internally unpopular regimes like the Saudi royal family for decades only because they give us a good deal on oil.

But, the threat that the Saudis have is restricting our oil supply. And by propping up the regime, we mitigate that threat. I'm not saying that we're doing the 100% right thing.

With China, we are supporting a state that takes jobs from us, and (imho) plans to blow us up as soon as they can. I don't see that kind of threat from the oil producing countries.

Maybe we should be working to develop the oil producers in this hemisphere instead of having to rely on the mid east.

Flame proof suit on.

And that is exactly Bush's reason for wanting to drill more in Alaska. (except that most of the oil would be going ... where? You guessed it! CHINA!)
Personally I think we should scrap the oil idea altogether and work on solar, wind, and hydrogen power.

Alternate energy sources are a great idea. We have the intelligence and the resources to develop some viable alternative to oil; we just need to allocate the resources properly. That probably means taking some money away from the war machine though. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening, especially with our oil lubricated and financed president.

I've heard that Alaska has about 6 months worth of oil for the US. We need to save that as our super-backup-reserve (like the weed left on the rolling tray ). We're no where near the point of needing that oil. It won't make a difference in the price of oil, and it won't ake a difference on our long term dependence on foreign oil.

Do you have a link about us going to ship the oil to China? I'd be interested in reading more about that.
